as not. I was paralyzed. That was rough. The vet said I should be euthanized but my family said no. They worked with me doing some water therapy and learned how to express my bladder since I can’t do it on my own (super easy to do). I even got my very own set of wheels! I was happy again. Fast forward and my family got evicted and me and my brother got sent to animal services. They separated us and my brother went off to another home almost immediately which left me alone and terrified. What was my fate? My chances of surviving there were almost zero. Then a rescue put in for me. And then they bailed on me. I saw my life go down the drain at that moment.Luckily Polka Dogz came through and I’m safe. The first two weeks were a little rough during the transition since my foster has 7 other dogs. I can have a little attitude but I settled in after a couple of weeks and actually became friends with her other paralyzed pup. We’re like two peas in a pod.Now I’m looking for my own home with a special person. I have a few quirks to work through but I’m a super loving boy. I like to snuggle or hang out in my bed. I’ve started playing with toys again and I love to go for walks in my wheelchair. I’m quite good at it. I would like to be your only dog but I do learn to get along with others. I’m on a pretty good schedule so as long as you express me about 3 times a day all is good. I’m actually pretty low maintenance for a special needs guy. My life has been turned upside down 3 times and I’m only 8 years old. Can you please help me find my FOREVER home? Papi aka Rooster. 10 lbs, 8 years old, chihuahua. *no small kids under 10, ok with cats, prefers to be only dog See photos and videos of adoptable dogs at .facebook/polkadogz PLEASE NOTE: All your current pets must be spayed/neutered, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention to adopt from Polka Dogz. We only adopt in Florida. All adoption fees go to help all the dogs in the rescue, some of which require extensive medical care. Thank you for caring for the greater good. Adoption fee is $250 and you can adopt me at POLKADOGZ.ORG

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
