tioch Animal Services and Antioch Animal Services Rescue Page. Pigeon is an 11 yr old, 14 lb Longhaired Chihuahua. She is spayed, vaccinated, microchipped, free of parasites and has had her teeth cleaned and senior labwork. Pigeon was a stray that was microchipped! But, alas, when they contacted the registered owner it turns out that she was given away years ago and they did not have their information and did not want her back. The "new" owner never came for her and so we happily took her into our program :) Pigeon (also known as Pixie-Trixie-Foxy-Lady) is absolutely perfect. She loves people of all ages, other dogs and is fine with cats. She walks well on a leash, is crate trained and seems to be housebroken although we have not figured out her system yet. Pigeon is about 3-4 lbs overweight and is on a diet and exercise plan to get down to an ideal 10-11 lbs. She does need to take a pill once or twice a day for her thyroid which is about $5/month. We will send her to a new home with a one year supply. Being on this medicine, a diet food and getting some exercise should help her shed the weight quickly and healthily. From her foster mom: is extremely chill. she is happy to lay on her pillow for long leisurely naps or just as happy in your lap for the same. She loves attention and will make little noises at your feet to let you know that she's there and would like her little butt scratched. And that she is back off to her pillow being a princess is a lot of work. She is potty trained she is crate trained she enjoys walks on the leash even though she's a little heavy she still gets through it we're still working on her weight (sorry) She is fine with my young grandchildren but would prefer to avoid them I think they're a little too busy for her and it scares her a little when they are over she will go in her crate on her own I think it's just because they are so rambunctious. She loves meatloaf flavored treats and is fine with our cat and all of my other dogs although she will check Ari with a "leave me alone bark" every now and again when she has been in her face for two long. Pigeon is an extremely sweet dog and we love her! If you would like to donate towards sending her with a year's worth of medication ($5/month or $60/year) please do so at www.paypal.me/UOH To inquire about adopting Pigeon, please email beourpet@gmail.com. We are located in the San Francisco East Bay Area of CA and we adopt to people anywhere as long as they come to us to adopt. We will not ship our dogs like they are Amazon.com goods and although we ARE willing to work with people, we are all volunteers and are not going to arrange to deliver her to your doorstep - you would need to be involved in the process and that almost always entails being willing to travel to us. #startastoryadopt #shelterpetlove #longhairedchihuahua #seniorpetsrock #seniordogsrule GENERAL INFO: Housebroken?: Yes, we think so Crate Trained?: Yes Leash Trained?: Yes Rides Well in Car?: Yes Non-Shedding?: No Good with cats?: Yes, we think so Good with dogs?: Yes Qualifies for Seniors for Seniors?: yes Umbrella of Hope does not have any strict rules on ages of children because all children are different, but our best approximation is that this animal would do best with children over the age of 5 Umbrella of Hope is a non-profit animal rescue based out of Pittsburg, CA that rescues animals off death row from local shelters. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
