I am Pistachio. I am about 7 years old and weigh 7 lbs. Did you know that Chihuahuas have the largest brain to body ratio of any breed? Pretty cool, right? I am a loving little girl, but I need a chance to warm up to people. Trust and comfort take time for me to develop, but I’ll be happy and wagging my tail all day once I do. Please be patient with me and give me time, but don’t worry! I don’t bite even when I’m still feeling shy. At home, I like to live a pretty chill life. I love having a selection of dog beds to choose from and even love to cuddle with another small dog. I get along well with other dogs who are laid back, but I prefer small dogs instead of big dogs. Though I am small, I do have a strong prey-drive, so I will chase after cats. Cats are NOT good siblings or friends for me. I haven’t met many children and chances are they will make me uncomfortable. I am mostly potty trained and know what “go potty” means, but I slip up on occasion. If I’m kept in the house all day I might have an accident (although I am okay wearing panties). Crates are no problem. A fenced yard is not necessary for me as I go out with my leash and harness on for both potty time and my daily walk. Overwhelming commotion will scare me; I really need calm environments and slow introductions since I’m not sure if strangers are going to be nice to me. I prefer women right now but I do kind of like my foster dad. Just don’t tell him. Also, please don’t run up to me or grab me from behind as it’s scary, but I’m a good girl and don’t bite when I’m scared. Most of the time I’m quiet, but if I see other dogs getting food I might bark to remind you not to forget me. Sleeping in your bed, under the covers, is heaven and makes me feel like I belong. My perfect day is: waking up in the people bed, eating, choosing from a comfy selection of beds in the sun with a small friend, having a snack, taking a walk, back to that bed, and dinner! If that sounds like your perfect day as well, and you can be patient and give me time to trust you, then I will be the perfect dog for you! Many of our dogs are rescued from commercial breeders where they spent their lives getting comfort from their canine friends. In turn, most require another companion dog in their forever home in order for them to feel safe. If you are interested in a particular dog, and do not currently have a dog residing with you, please understand that your home might not be the right fit for many of our dogs. ***Be sure to check your spam/junk folder as sometimes our emails end up there*** ADOPTION EVENTS: Adoption events are updated as the foster home RSVP's to attend. Check back for updates on which events they will be attending. Please understand that all of our pets are in volunteer foster homes and sometimes "life" happens and the foster family cannot make it to their scheduled adoption event. If you are traveling from a far distance to meet a specific animal, please understand we cannot guarantee event attendance. You may wish to consider applying and setting up a private appointment. Private appointments are only scheduled after an application is submitted and approved. ADOPTION PROCEDURE: The first step in our process is to complete an online adoption application on our website: http://www.underdogrescuemn.com/adoptionprocess/ Note: In most circumstances Underdog Rescue will only adopt within 60 miles of Minneapolis, MN. All of our foster animals can be seen by appointment with an approved adoption application. Contact us at http://www.underdogrescuemn.com/contact-us/ if you have further questions. FOSTER CARE: All of our animals are fostered in individual homes or doggie daycare facilities. While they are in our care, they are part of our families and given lots of love. We work on training, crate-training and socialization prior to adoption. Each animal's behavior is evaluated and we have a sense of its temperament and personality. We look for adopters who will give each animal the wonderful life and permanent home that he or she deserves. If you have an interest and ability to be a foster home, please visit our website www.underdogrescuemn.com/foster-applications and fill out a foster application. NUTRITION: Nutrition is vital to the rehabilitation and life-long health of our pets. All of our foster animals are fed a premium diet such as NutriSource, Canidae, Orijen, Nature's Variety, Fromm, Pure Vita, Stella and Chewy's, Primal, or balanced raw diet. All adopters are required to continue providing premium diets for the life of the animal. YOU CAN HELP: Not able to foster or adopt right now? Please consider sponsoring an Underdog. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
