One of our friends went out one morning to start her truck before work. As she was going back inside she saw a small scared soaking wet little dog. She called her over but she stayed out of reach. Eventually she chased her into her garage got her some blankets and food just until after work. After work she tried to make friends with her and took photos to post in hopes of finding her family. Sadly nobody was looking for her. She caught the little girl and gave her a nice warm bath- she was scared but didn't try to bite so that was promising. Well, when her family could not be found she asked if she could come into our program- she needed some work though as she was still very scared. We agreed to take her and she has since been spayed, heart worm tested, chipped, and brought up to date on all vaccines. We have also been working with her on her trust issues and she is trying to make contact now but really needs to be in a family of her own where she can bond with her own family and learn what love is. Please visit us on Facebook and click on videos to see her personality more or scroll to the bottom I posted some links Temperament- Very curious, sweet, gentle but still fearful. Energy Level- Mid level energy. Dogs/Cats- Good with other other dogs and good with cats. She usually finds another dog that she loves and pairs up with. House trained- House trained and using a dog door. I don't know what she would do without a dog door - she doesn't seem to give me a sign she just goes out when she needs to. She has never been on carpet though so not sure if she would have accidents or not. She may or may not revert if adopted- that is just something an adopter would have to watch. Eliza is a sweet girl who would love a family of her very own that has the patience and love to show her what being part of a family is all about. She is just so cute and can be very sweet sometimes once she trusts someone. However, upon saying that she is still a very nervous pup even after being here for almost 2 years. She has cat like tendencies. When she is outside she will keep her distance from us but inside depending on how many people are around she comes to say hi and cuddle on the couch. However, there are also times that she will roam the house nervously. She has been left in the house with my cats and ignores them so no worries there. Sweet Eliza will make a wonderful addition to any quiet, loving family that would love a tiny little project dog to love even though it might take a while - as mentioned she has been here almost 2 years and is still fearful at times. *** A few things about Eliza that we feel are important for any potential adopters to know. Yes we love her and would love nothing more than for her to find a home however we also don't think we should set her or a potential adopter up for failure by just telling everyone she is sweet and wonderful. She is special and can be a wonderful companion for someone special but these are a few important issues one should know. 1- She can scale wire fencing if she wants to escape and initially she will attempt escape until she is familiar with the home. 2- She is scared of storms and will almost panic and must be inside before they start or she will attempt escape- climbing fences to run blindly away. 3-She is very cat like but more like a nervous cat- she has taken 2 years with us just to get to the point of coming and licking my hand while I am watching tv. She will usually kind of panic and dodge when we are walking. No she has never been kicked while here but maybe in her past she had been? We are not sure. She is just a very nervous dog. .facebook/203840136304815/videos/2053977684910601/ .facebook/203840136304815/videos/2411666895560696/ Adoption fee $150 includes spay, age appropriate vaccinations (4 for puppies), deworming, microchip, rabies vacc, heartworm test (neg), collar and leash, training information, and all the support you need. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
