eek of May 2016, three weeks after our beloved dog Harold d ied. He recently starred as TOTO in Penfield High School's production of The Wizard of Oz! Our Joyful Rescue is one of the best decisions our family has ever made – Cosmo has truly been a wonderful friend and member of our family. For the holiday season, we thought that the best way to truly celebrate was to sponsor a transport on my family’s name. All four of our dogs (and our cats over the years) have come from various rescue organizations, and everybody in the Gabbey family recognizes the importance of animal rescue groups, and the dedication it takes to provide love and comfort for these amazing dogs and cats. My parents have owned three schnauzers – Daffy, Darby and Daisy – and my brother’s dog, Alvy, was a part of the family until he died this past summer at the amazing age of 16! My brother’s wife was the long-time director of the Baltimore, Maryland ASPCA, and continues animal volunteer work in Savannah, Georgia, so dogs are very near and dear to all our hearts. The “ Gabbey ” transport will hopefully not only save wonderful and loving animals, but also spread as much happiness to as many families as possible. We want adoptive Joyful Rescue families to have as much love and fun with these rescue animals as we have had with Cosmo." ~ Paul Gabbey Huge thanks to Paul Gabbey and his Cosmo for such a generous, life-saving donation! UPDATE FROM FOSTER MOM: My middle name is Tag-Along, like the yummy PB and chocolate Girl Scout cookies. Not only am a delightful, but I also enjoy tagging along with my human wherever they go! I am very well behaved, I come when called, and if my person can let me out every 4-6 hours I am excellent in the house and know to potty outside. I am great with the other dogs in my foster home, and I am sure to greet the cats in my foster home and then I pretty much ignore them. They just aren’t that interesting to me. I tend to be more of an observer, but if one of the other dogs that I live with invites me to play I will join in. I am not an instigator and seem to have a nice, even, medium level of energy. There is one thing that makes me a little nervous. Sometimes when I meet new people or I get into new situations, I get a little worried about what their intentions are or what is going to happen. I then hide behind my foster mom. She says that I need to work on my level of confidence, and I promised her that I would. So now she makes me go out and meet new people and get into new situations. One thing that really helps me to know that everything is ok and that the new person is nice is when they give me a bit of a yummy treat. I take treats very nicely, and just one or two tiny bits lets me know that the new person is a good person and we will get along swimmingly well. Then I will give kisses and wiggle my tail … and sometimes my butt even joins the party and wiggles too!!! I am so sweet, happy, cuddly and smart. I love belly rubs, walks with my people, and learning new things. I would love a family to call my own so we can have many new adventures as the weather turns nice and I can show off my new confidence! The Adoption Fee for this dog is $325.00. Adoptions fees vary based on adoptability. In general our fees include spay/neuter, all age appropriate vaccines, Home Again micro-chipping & registration, worming & flea control - a "complete" pet. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
