and up only, please House trained: Mostly Crate trained: Yes Energy level: Moderate History: From a shelter in Missouri Adoption Fee: $350 From the Foster: Taco is crate trained Taco is about 90% potty trained. The other 10% is, I truly believe, due to the cold. He’s a southern gentleman and not used to the arctic tundra that is Minnesota. We’ve tried the potty pad but it appears we insulted him as he decided to pee around the pad. He can hold his bladder about 7.5-8 hours (during the work day). Taco is pretty darn awesome! He currently lives with two biggies---one at 115 lbs. and the other 80 lbs. No issues at all. Taco is your standard, “typical,” small dog. Now that he’s with his crew, he acts as if he needs to outweigh his foster siblings in personality. What that means is being a part of the commotion that is our household. He has a blast chasing our biggest dog—and she loves it! He likes to start play time with the 80 lb. but forgets that he’s trying to wrestle with an 80 lb. dog. But he can hold his own. No issues with wrestling with the biggie, because if he feels like he may be “losing,” he jumps onto our couch for leverage. He also is great about listening to dog cues. Our biggest dog is a funky one—she doesn’t like to really play in the home and Taco has listened to her ‘no’s’ without any issues. Things to note: - When Taco first came, he wanted what he thought could be JUST his---human laps and couches. We corrected that right away, and he hasn’t had issues since. He is very smart. - Taco is an opportunist at times—again he came from a setting where he had to fend for himself to survive (he was let out of a car in the country side and the people drove away). We left our chair out from the dining room able and came back to find him on our dining room table—it was totally on us! But we have to remind ourselves to push in our chairs. ** He can be shy with new people. No aggression but he likes to play hard to get. Our 80 lb. dog shows him how-to-dog and he loves that. But on his own, meeting new people, he is not as confident and will go back to his people for reassurance. Surprisingly, Taco does not have the “typical” small dog bark. We have only heard him bark once! Our 115 lb. likes to bark at absolutely nothing and Taco does not react. It’s been amazing! Taco LOVES to be pet and swooned at—he truly believes all people need to pet his chest and he will actually clue you in by guiding your hand with his paws, closer to his chest. Garsh, he is hilariously wonderful! All dogs are in individual foster homes throughout the Twin Cities. FILL OUT AN APPLICATION TODAY! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
