is debonair gentleman may not be able to see with his eyes but he can see with his heart. He is looking for an adopter who can take the roll as the alpha human who will ensure he feels protected and safe in his home. He would also do best in a calm environment instead of a chaotic household This is what his foster mom says about him - "Captain doesn’t seem to have trouble navigating despite his lack of vision. He gets around fine and loves exploring. He loves to hangout and snuggle. Naps are his favorite thing. Due to his tiny size and inability to see he can be nippy if startled but he loves being your little shadow. In the presence of dogs with higher energy (like his foster sibling) Captain can become a bit unpredictable so he is not compatible for children. Captain will need an owner he can trust that will advocate for his needs. He loves people, he tolerates dogs and he is friendly with cats. He likes short walks and exploring. He has been marking in the house but is working on potty training. He will be a great companion to the right match. " If you are interested in adding a new Captain to your ship, please send us an email to beourpetgmail If you are unable to adopt but want to help this sweet sailor find his forever home, ***PLEASE SHARE THIS POST*** GENERAL INFO: Housebroken?: Marks in new environment Crate Trained?: Yes Leash Trained?: Yes Rides Well in Car?: Yes Non-Shedding?: No Good with cats?: Yes, we think so Good with dogs?: Yes but indifferent Qualifies for Seniors for Seniors?: yes Umbrella of Hope does not have any strict rules on ages of children because all children are different, but our best approximation is that this animal would do best with children over the age of 12 Umbrella of Hope is an all-volunteer, donation-run, non-profit animal rescue based out of Pittsburg, CA that rescues animals from local shelters, places them in private foster homes, provides them with needed medical care and then finds them new homes. Also, ask us about our seniors for seniors program, where we adopt animals 5 years or older to qualified homes with a $5 donation as an adoption fee. All animals are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, treated for parasites and given any additional treatments (dental work, bloodwork etc) as recommended by our vet. Adoptions to veterans of the US Armed Services are ALWAYS free to thank you for your service. We thank Well Pet Vet Clinic for providing most of our veterinary services and give a special thanks to volunteer photographers Tanya, Barbara, Kristy, Christine, Teressa and Natalie. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
