e streets of SoCal and arrived in Portland as skin and bones, with a bunch of infections and a gimpy leg. I’m on the mend though and my personality is shining through. Turns out I’m a wildly loving and fierce little street mama who can’t wait to be someone’s permanent lap clown. I am the silliest little cuddle muffin, contorting into all kinds of funny positions to get just the right scratches. And I have the sweetest little ant-eater tongue that I’ll use to shower you with kisses. I’m also brimming with personality and full of opinions that I’ll be sure to share with you. I’ve clearly had lots of puppies, and just finally got spayed recently. But my protective instincts are extra sharp - I can be territorial with my bed, toys, and sometime food. My foster mom thinks that it’s probably from being a tiny little dog living on the streets working hard to protect my babies from who knows what, and for who knows how long. As I’m realizing that there’s no shortage of food or toys I’m calming down, but I dream of a home with someone with a huge heart and a lot of patience who will help me to feel safe and secure. We’re working on potty training. I’m getting pretty good about it, but I’m a skinny little short-haired Cali girl and going out in the cold weather is tough! I like to be bundled up in my jacket, and once I get out and get warmed up I have fun running around the yard with my foster sister, a mini-australian shepherd. There’s a cat and two dogs where I’m living right now and I love bathing them and cleaning their ears. They’re all very laid back and take my territorial outbursts in stride. I don’t think I’d do very well with a timid cat, or really high-strung dogs, and small children who might try to come steal my toys probably aren’t a great idea. If you have a big heart, warm lap, and are looking for love and entertainment, I’m your girl! Every Underdog has been spayed/neutered, micro-chipped, and is up to date on vaccinations. All dogs have had a recent visit to the vet as well. Adoption fee is $250 We offer a 10% discount for seniors, veterans and students. All of our dogs are in foster homes. We have an adoption application, we check references and visit your home as part of our adoption process. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
