over 8 weeks and was fortunate to have dedicated community members determined to capture her and get her to safety. She was finally trapped after being hit by a car. She had a fractured tailbone, lacerations, and some chipped teeth, but thankfully nothing that couldn’t be fixed or would cause long-term issues. After some pain meds, antibiotics, and a full dental, she’s feeling great and has settled in well to home life. Gypsy is currently being fostered by Kristin and Donnie and their pack of two dogs. She was also fostered in South Carolina with three dogs, both large and small. She’s done well as part of a pack and is described as a little lovebug. She is housetrained and does fine in the crate; she may whine at first but does settle down. She will even lie down in the crate sometimes with it left open. She’s okay on leash but will pull. We suspect Gypsy is newer to leash walking but she's getting daily practice in her foster home. Mostly, Gypsy wants to hang out with her humans and will take all the attention someone can give her. She appreciates the comforts of home and prefers to be inside after her long adventure on the road. Who can blame her? Overall, Gypsy has a laid-back personality with the perfect amount of playfulness. She will play with both the large and small dogs and has no aggression or roughhouse play at all. She has started to enjoy romping and exploring the yard and will sometimes chase a squirrel, but never for long periods…she would much prefer to be inside near you. She has done well meeting new people and is comfortable with women, men, and kids. Like most pups, Gypsy loves feeding time and is very food and treat-motivated. She uses a slow feeder bowl to control her speed and does fine sharing treats and bone time with the other dogs. Gypsy can be a little possessive and may give a little growl if another dog gets close to her bone. She doesn’t take action and responds well to corrections. She’s a very sensitive pup and doesn’t like to be in trouble, so a stern verbal “No” is all she needs. FOSTER MOM UPDATE - 11/26/23 “She is a really fabulous little girl who is going to make someone a great dog. She was timid/nervous when she first arrived on transport, as expected. By the next day, she was much more comfortable and did fine with my husband. She's great with people and dogs. She’s done really meeting new people and warms up to everyone really quickly. She has a fair amount of energy and loves to go on walks and hikes. She’s vocal in the car if you try to tether or crate her for safety. She will cry if you put her in the crate. She is fine once she arrives at her destination. I think she would be okay as an only dog. She does enjoy the comfort of other dogs, but it's mostly about her people.” ****** Gypsy will make an excellent companion and would do fine as part of a pack or as an only dog getting all your attention. She is a laid-back, easy-going girl who just wants to be with her person, preferably someone who will give her daily walks, unlimited belly rubs, a little playtime, and provide a warm, safe home. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
