my big ears?!! I have something else that is big – my smile when you play with me. I Lub, Lub, Lub to play and I am fun at it. I come from a home with 4 young kids from ages 2 - 10 so I adore little kids and would love to have one or two to play with. I also play well will other dogs big ones and small ones my size. I am 11 pounds and I just turned 1 year old March 7. My Veterinarian says I am a ChiWeenie meaning I am mixed with Chihuahua and Dachshund. I have reached my full weight and height so I’ll be a small little girl forever. That only means I can cuddle with you more and I give the sweetest, softest kisses you ever had. I love kids! I use to have 4 of them to play with. I am gentle with all kids too. The biggest thing about me is that I have a huge heart and the biggest lover you will ever meet. I am looking for a home that will walk me as I am very nosy and love to walk to see what I can see. I don’t have a big dog personality but when you get the leash out I am ready to go for my walk and may pull a little bit at first but then I calm down and walk right beside you. Most times I don’t even stop to sniff things; I just walk like a little lady. And I like going for car rides too so I can look out the window. Of course I am house-trained and crate trained and will go to the back door to let you know I need to potty. My kids parents say they are too busy to have me around anymore so I have to find a new home. I am praying I find a great home that will love me forever and make me a part of their family. Most of all I would love for you to rub my head and play with me and do not punish me for wanting to play with you. I obey and lay in my bed with a very hard chew bone and toys because I am a bit independent and will play by myself. Right now I am being punished for playing with the kids while they do their homework so I have been kicked out of the house and kept on a chain all day and all night. I get scared at night and some nights it has been cold so I cry and whine hoping they will let me in. My neighbor kept hearing me and convinced them to surrender me so someone could adopt me and give me hugs and love. Will you be that someone please? I am a very good girl, my neighbor and her dogs can vouch for me, I love going over there to play and getting treats. I am up to date on all of my vaccinations, rabies and on monthly preventative for heartworms, I tested Negative!!! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
