ey call me Ninja. Howlever, they could have also named me Spot. Not because it is a classic nostalgic doggie name. But because it would ring true on Tongue Out Tuesday because my spots are only on my licker. Likes: Well I really love to be outside and I really love to snuggly with Foster Dale on the couch at night. I have trained Foster Dale that at 9:30 every night we go for long walks I really love those long walks can you find me a place with long walks and some where I can run and be outside? Favorite Quote: “As long as you live under my roof, you will follow my rules” –Parents Everywhere. I am totally willing to learn your rules, I would just be happy to have a roof and parents to nag on me! Foster Dale and Foster Roxanne give me treats and are showing me about toys. But we practice rules too. Age/Weight/Breed: I am a boy 2 year old, 45-50 pound German Shepherd mixed with maybe Chow as a guess. It is a guess, I do have lots of blue spots on my tongue like Chow dogs, but lots of other breeds can have spots too, so the pawsiblities are endless. I do have some guard dog in me, because I woof to let my Fosters know someone is there. Secret “I need to potty” Code: I’m crate trained. I sometimes have potty mistakes if you don’t crate me when you leave, so I am not free range house approved just yet. When someone is home, I let them know I need to go out by running in circles and crying. Best Feature: My outstanding personality! And I would say my best feature is my color, it is like “whoa, is he chocolate, is he black, is he mahogany, is he burnt umber, is he hickory smoked sausage?” The pawsibilities are very yummy. I also have a sprinkle of black pepper on my chest. Life Outlook: Sunny side up! Like an egg yolk on a plate with bacon next to it, a very happy plate, where the bacon makes a smile and there are two eggs making eyes. Why do all my answers end up in food??? Because I was found looking for food at a gas station. Final Thought: Salmon food makes my poop mushy, but chicken and rice doesn’t. Was that TMI (too mutt information???) I promise to always be nice to other dogs, sweet to you, and to never steal your bacon. *crosses fingers behind his back* Okay, I might steal your bacon, but I will be sweet to all people and all dogs if you give me a home. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
