aybe even cats. Bentley is 100% best friend material; the kind of dog who might just run into a burning building to save his beloved owner. Bentley is probably a golden Labrador mix who weighs in at ~ 40lbs (we call this ''perfectly-sized''). It is estimated he is ~ 10 years young but don''t let that number fool you; other than a little white around his face, this handsome guy looks & acts MUCH younger than his age. If you didn''t know better, you would easily think Bentley was ~ 3-4 years old. He is well past the spastic puppy phase, is full of wisdom & impeccably well-behaved but is still young at heart (if you''re lucky, one day he may even decide to tell you all about his life travels over a cup of coffee). Bentley currently lives with loving children, other dogs & he has done great meeting dogs both big & small. He doesn''t live with cats, but has met them & was only mildly interested in sniffing. Bentley is crate-trained, house-trained, can walk nicely on a leash, knows how to SIT on command, comes when called & promises to never complain about your morning breath. He is generally a quiet dog, only occasionally barking when it is time to go outside or to get out of the crate. Bentley also has wonderful & respectful top-notch manners; this incredibly loving boy tries so hard to make people happy in all he does. Finally, Bentley is usually a very calm boy & could undoubtedly write a book on the art of relaxation. Once he finds his spot in the house, that''s where you will usually find him - most likely content to lay there all day. Still, some daily movement is always good & Bentley wouldn''t mind joining you on a nice walk to an easy-going area. He can be sweetly shy from time-to-time & sometimes initially in new situations; but, while that may make you think he would be somewhat of a homebody, he really isn''t. True, Bentley probably won''t want to join you in the front row of a rock concert but he does like to get out of the house & is happy when visiting the dog park & meeting new friends (both dog & human). Dog. Everlasting companion. Devoted side-kick. Furry pal. This gentleman is for you. Bentley is located in Waco, TX & available to adopt through Humane Society of Central Texas, 254-754-1454. His adoption fee is only $50; he is neutered, current on vaccinations, microchipped & heartworm negative.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
