Join us in Making that Happen? Available for Adoption , Senior to Senior Dogs for Sponsorship , Seniors to Seniors Foster Meet Gracie, a 10 year old collie who desperately needed help and Almost Home stepped in to provide it. Gracie had a loving home, but life rarely goes according to the plan and circumstances made it impossible for her family to give her the care they knew she needed. They reached out to surrender her and Almost Home took her in. Grace came with some age related issues that were not unexpected. However, it soon became clear, as tests were done and results received, that Gracie needed special care and would need it for the rest of her life. She has an incurable disease called Cushings. It effects the endocrine system of a dog and if left untreated produces symptoms that may become difficult to manage in a home and are very uncomfortable for the dog. Although not curable, medications can alleviate most of the symptoms. But, these medications are expensive and require frequent bloodwork to insure that the dosage is not too high which can lead to other severe problems. We at Almost home are careful to be financially responsible and solvent. However, we cannot ignore the plight of dogs like Gracie who if left untreated face a shortened and miserable existence. Our mission is clear and our hearts confirm it in believing that a dog should be able to live his or her life out as part of a family with love and care. And that’s where you can help. Our Senior to Senior program matches dogs, who have special needs with families who agree to be permanent fosters. Gracie is house trained and obedient and stays with her foster while they are outside together. She is overweight so is on a calorie restricted diet and this, we believe, will help her mobility. She moves around easily, but only stands still for a short period of time before lying down. She does well with the dogs and cats in her temporary household. She comes to your to be petted and absolutely loves belly rubs. She is trustworthy in the house and does not need to be crated. Might you be able to open up your heart and home to Gracie? If you are not able to foster at this time, would you consider sponsoring Gracie to help defray the cost of her medications? Gracie’s medication costs for her Vetoryl will be $136.60/month. This does not include the regular bloodwork and rechecks at the veterinarian clinic nor her food and monthly heartworm medication. Will you help us make sure that Gracie has the very best opportunity to be as healthy as she can be for the rest of her life? Donations may be made with a credit card or paypal. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
