eventative and is microchipped. Meet JoJo! We think JoJo is a collie/greyhound mix, but we do know JoJo is one of 3 puppies that were left in someone's yard in June 2016. His 2 siblings got adopted quickly, but JoJo has unfortunately not been as lucky. He spent two years at our southern partner's shelter and as much as they did all they could for him, a shelter is never the ideal place for a dog. Spending two years at a shelter has really shaken JoJo's self esteem and how can you blame him. He's been in two foster homes since February 2018 and is doing better, but we are hoping that someone will see JoJo's wonderful spirit shine through his shyness and make him a forever home in the northeast. As with all of our rescues, we think of George Browning's poem excerpt, "Grow old along with me, the best is yet to be!" And this is especially true of JoJo. JoJo does great with other dogs and in fact, that's when you can see his personality shine. We think he'd be great with another balanced canine family member. He's currently living with a few other dogs and a chicken and he's even left the chicken alone, even though he's a bit interested in it. He hasn't been tested with cats or children, but due to his shyness, a busy household is not likely ideal. He is playful, respects corrections, but is a little cautious with new situations and new people. JoJo does love rides in the car and jumps eagerly in, waiting for his current foster mom to shut the door. He's brushing up on his canine good citizen skills. He is working on his housetraining skills (he's had a few accidents) and his leash walking skills. He does not do well in thunderstorms, especially in a crate and will likely do damage to the crate and maybe to himself as well. But he does do well being comforted by a human friend, when the winds and rains are raging outside. We think to build his confidence, obedience classes would be a great idea. Plus, it'll help form a bond between JoJo and his forever family members. While a yard is a good place for some dogs to get exercise, JoJo doesn't like to be left alone so long walks are better and he's doing well with long walks with his current foster. After that, he's a pretty chill dog. His foster says that JoJo has an awesome smirk - that whenever he's happy, he scrunches his nose. We hope that his forever home will give him a thousand reasons to smile more so we can see that face. If you can accept JoJo's shyness and are interested in bringing out his smiles and providing him a forever home, fill out an application and an adoption counselor will get in touch. Adoption Fee: $ 425 To apply for this dog, fill out an adoption application on our website: www.sosarl.org/aa/ **Additional info you should know - For most of our dogs, we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each of our dogs as an individual and do our best to describe and place them based on personality not breed label. Some dogs may not yet be in New England, nor ready for immediate adoption. There may be additional vetting, quarantine, waiting periods and/or fees depending upon your state of residence. If you have questions or concerns on any of this, you can discuss this with your Adoption Counselor.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
