Here is the good news: Biscuit is one of the sweetest dogs that I have fostered! He has exhibited absolutely no aggression whatsoever. Indeed, he is one of the most timid dogs that has been in the house. He is a gorgeous dog! He has the most soulful eyes and a beautiful coat. There are those moments when he exhibits what he can become, a great companion who will love you and please you. It is however, going to take time to get him where he needs to be. Biscuit is unsure about everything. We are not sure about his backstory. He came to AADR from an “independent” rescue in Alabama. All we know is that he is afraid of practically everything. Initially, he does not want to come to you. He does not like to be in his crate unattended. He came with no potty training whatsoever. He was not even bribed by treats he was so fearful! All of this is getting better. He has been with his foster dad for almost three weeks and he is starting to come out of his shell. He has a healthy appetite and is slowly getting better with his potty training. He gets along with the three female dachshunds in the house and has had no issues when dog friends have come over to the house for a visit. He does have a thyroid issue which means that he has to take Thyroxin with every meal. If you hide it in his softened kibble or put it in a bit of cheese, he will take the pill with no issue at all. Biscuit has the potential to become a great dog. His foster dad has no problem in believing that with the right family, with a lot of love, and with a lot of time, he will become a great companion filled with love. He needs someone to give him the time, the love and, above all, the patience to believe in him. Are you that special person and family that will give him that love? =============== Information for All Dogs/Adopters ============== If you have questions about this dog, please feel free to contact the foster home at the email address listed above. They have the most up-to-date information concerning the dog and would be happy to answer any questions about the animal. We welcome out of state and Canadian adoptions, but we will not ship any dog via cargo. You will have to make arrangements to pick up the dog or for them to go by ground transport. If you choose transporting by either volunteers through our organization or by paid transporter, there will be an additional $45 fee added for the required Health Certificate. We will not adopt into the state of CT, RI, NH, ME or MA due to strict laws regarding importation of dogs into those states. If you have an issue with this, you need to take this up with your legislatures. To understand the adoption process through AADR, please review the Adoption Information on our home page. Transportation options are outlined on that page in Step 3. If you are interested in adopting this Dachshund please review Read Before You Adopt and then you can complete an Application. THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN A RESCUE. Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast. We just can't get them from one Coast to the other but some day we hope to have enough volunteers to do that as well. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
