She could smell them. She was obsessed. I had to relocate the bird feeder that was on the window. Although she is blind, this girl is a force to be reckoned with. UPDATE FROM MADDIE'S FOSTER MOM (5/7/17): Please see the picture below of amazing Maddie using the ramp by my bed. She's sharp as a tack, and has mastered the doggie door that leads to a small deck with another ramp to the yard. Now let's herself in and out and sometimes puts herself in the bed. BIO UPDATE (4/28/17): Maddie has been a surprisingly delightful little girl. She knows her way around the house pretty well now. She is a good eater and a good sleeper (in my bed). She was not happy with her crate. Her house training is very good. Maddie is still not sure of our doggie door, but she's more than happy to go out the back door. I'm working on training her to go up and down ramp which is not her fav thing right now, but I think she's curious enough to try. She tries to hit puppy pads on rainy days which I think is remarkable for this beautiful blind baby. Maddie has a sweet personality except if our other Doxie gets too close to me. She starts growling; same thing with food. So they eat separately. She and our cat ignore each other for the most part. She's doesn't want the cat too close either. There's four of us in one bed at different times of day and night. Maddie likes to just know someone is there for the most part. But I've taken a couple of trips to the grocery with no repercussions. However, I would not leave her for long periods unless she is crated. Oh, and she gives the sweetest kisses. BIO: Hi, my name is Maddie! I came from a neglect situation where a good Samaritan found me and looked to this rescue to take me. Because I am blind, you’ll need to let me smell your hand first and speak to me before you just pick me up because if you startle me, I’m likely to snap at you but only because you’ve scared me and for no other reason. I like people and I like attention! I will follow the sound of your voice and though I am blind, I get around amazingly well if I do say so myself. I’m fine with other dogs (small), male and female. Kids over 10 years would be fine as long as they understand they should not scare me. They told me to tell you that because I’m blind, they’d really like a fenced-in yard for me because I love to be outside in the sunshine and warm weather! They think I’d be fine as an only dog but I’m not talkin’. If you have a doggie door, I use it like a champ. If you don’t, it’ll take a little work to train me to go to the door but I can hear you so I’ll follow the sound of your voice to the door. Because I’m blind, I can’t do going down steps but I can come up them. So, it would be great if you’d build me a ramp to go up and down with. I guarantee you’ll never be sorry that you decided to adopt me. So please, please, make my dream and yours come true (but you don’t know yours yet till you adopt me)! =============== Information for All Dogs/Adopters ============== If you have questions about this dog please feel free to contact the foster home at the email address listed above. This foster home volunteer would be happy to answer and has the most up-to-date information about this dog. We welcome out of state and Canadian adoptions, but we will not ship any dog via cargo. You will need to make arrangements to pick up the dog or for them to go by ground transport. If you choose transporting by either volunteers through our organization or by paid transporter, there will be an additional $45 Fee added for the required Health Certificate. We will not adopt into the states of CT, RI, NH or MA due to strict laws regarding importation of dogs into those states. If you have an issue with this, please take this up with your legislatures. To understand the adoption process through AADR, please visit the Adoption Information section. Transportation options are outlined in Step 3. If you are interested in adopting this Dachshund please Read Before You Adopt and then you can complete an Application. THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN A RESCUE. Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers who will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast or up and down the West Coast. We just can't get them from one Coast to the other, but some day we hope to have enough volunteers to do that as well. For now, we encourage you to look for dogs on your coast.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
