Roxy was given as a puppy to an elderly woman as a gift. We never suggest giving puppies as gifts since it takes a LOT of time and patience to train a puppy. Although we are certain Roxy’s owner loved her, Roxy was not house-trained or taught proper house manners. We’re quite certain that Roxy ruled the household. Fast forward 5 years.... Roxy’s owner is hospitalized several times, enters rehab, and later passes away. For the past 9 months, Roxy’s world has been rocky at best! She has moved back and forth between several homes and several caregivers. Imagine how you would feel if you didn’t know where you’d be sleeping tomorrow or who would be feeding you your next meal. You’d be a little confused ... right?!? Roxy has been in her foster home for three weeks. She is learning the routine and starting to trust her foster mom, but she is still a work in progress. Roxy is doing very well at house-training and going outside on a schedule to poop and potty. She has figured out that she gets a small but awesome treatment for doing her business outside. She sleeps peacefully in an x-pen in the master bedroom each night... no crying and no accidents. Like many dachshunds, Roxy can be very headstrong. She obviously ran the household in the past. She will snap at you if you want her to do something she doesn’t want to do. She wears a slip lead around the house now so that her foster mom has control of any situation. Roxy’s behavior has improved ten-fold since coming into foster care. She is accepting of the new rules and the structured routine in the household. She is learning to trust her foster mom. Due to the instability in Roxy’s past, AADR is looking for a doxie savvy home that will continue with the structure provided in her current foster home. We want Roxy’s adoption to be successful, so we would like a family to be able to meet her in person prior to adoption. We do not want to add to Roxy’s confusion by putting her on a transport to an out-of-state adopter. If you think this beauty is the girl for you, please fill out an application at www.allamericandachshundrescue.org and then contact Roxy’s foster mom (Meg) with any questions at meg1709@comcast.net Roxy will be sooooo worth the time to continue her training! Are you ready??? =============== Information for All Dogs/Adopters ============== If you have questions about this dog, please feel free to contact the foster home at the email address listed above. They have the most up-to-date information concerning the dog and would be happy to answer any questions about the animal. We welcome out of state and Canadian adoptions, but we will not ship any dog via cargo. You will have to make arrangements to pick up the dog or for them to go by ground transport. If you choose transporting by either volunteers through our organization or by paid transporter, there will be an additional $45 fee added for the required Health Certificate. We will not adopt into the state of CT, RI, NH or MA due to strict laws regarding importation of dogs into those states. If you have an issue with this, you need to take this up with your legislatures. To understand the adoption process through AADR, please review the Adoption Information on our home page. Transportation options are outlined on that page in Step 3. If you are interested in adopting this Dachshund please review Read Before You Adopt and then you can complete an Application. THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN A RESCUE. Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast or up and down the West Coast. We just can't get them from one Coast to the other but some day we hope to have enough volunteers to do that as well. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
