e, but were unable to continue looking after me due to their family’s circumstance. My foster mom tells me I have an awesome personality, calm behavior and gentle disposition. Unfortunately my owners loved me very much and thought that overfeeding me with food, treats, and no exercise was showing additional love. I came into rescue weighing 21 lbs and I probably should lose another 8 lbs. I am on something called a diet and I am on my way. I have already lost 2 lbs. I eat two measured meals a day. Please do not feed me human food! My foster mom and I can both see the new “pep in my step” and I feel a lot better. I enjoy walks where I can sniff and explore my surroundings. I like my soft square dog bed with a soft blanket. If you are in the house, I will call out to you with squeaks until I find you or you find me. I pace around until I find my bed or my human, and then I settle down. I like to be with my human(s), so I will follow you around the house. I like to sleep in the human bed. If you are in the human bed, and I am alone downstairs, I will cry. Once you bring me to the human bed, I find a spot, make myself comfortable and will be very quiet. I cry if I am left alone while you are in the house. Once I am with you, I am happy and quiet. I love cuddling on the couch. I respond very well to a soft voice and positive reinforcement. When you nap, I will nap with you. I love getting praise and hearing my name said. I enjoy sitting with you on the couch, and snoozing while you’re watching TV. I will follow you around the house when you move from room to room. If you are looking for an older dog who enjoys slow walks, needs help losing a few Pounds, enjoys exploring the yard at her own speed, likes to cuddle, is a great companion napper, and who wants to become a member of your family, then I’m your gal. For additional information please contact my foster mom Shivaun (ShivaunLeonard@gmail.com) http://littlepawsdachshundrescue.rescuegroups.org/forms/form_humanverify?formid=2724 Adopt ion Fee: $150.00 + $45.00 for a health certificate if going over state lines (required by law). Dogs adopted in New England are subject to additional rules and regulations by the state departments of agriculture. Complying with these regulations is expensive for our rescue, and all dogs adopted in New England states are subject to an additional $135 fee to help cover a portion of these expenses. Transportation Help If you see a furbaby that is a match for your family, don’t let distance stand in the way of your adoption. LPDR can work with you to have a volunteer transport to assist with transportation or refer you to a paid transport.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
