Harper is an month old Dachshund-Italian Greyhound mix. She came into our rescue very shy and withdrawn. But love won over! This girl has blossomed in her foster home. We are blown away by the girl who clung to her rescuer begging for her to help and not leave her to this girl who runs with unashamed excitement and love for her foster family. She does twirls, dances on her back feet and has nothing but love to offer her people. This is the girl we know she will be eventually in her new home. She will be shy initially but boy oh boy, she has nothing but personality to offer if you give her a chance. Harper gets along well with other dogs. She has lived with big and little dogs. She definitely finds her confidence with other dogs. She would be an ideal candidate to join another dog already in the home. She will learn to trust that much quicker if she has another dog who braves the way for her. Harper is crate trained and house trained. Here is what Harper&#;s foster mom has to say about her: "Harper is one of my favorite dogs I have ever fostered. I just adore her! She&#;s such a happy girl. Harper LOVES to cuddle on the couch. She&#;s a great snuggler. She will even let me put the weight of my entire head on her tiny body and use her as a pillow! She also loves going for walks and sniffing all the smells. She&#;s great on leash and doesn&#;t pull. She tolerates her bossy foster brother pushing her around and her silly foster mom dressing her up in different outfits. Harper is a smart girl and learns commands quickly. We&#;re working on getting her to sit to get her leash on and off and the command "crate." She sleeps through the night in her crate without making a peep and waits to be let out in the morning. She&#;s not a barker at all. If a stranger comes into the house, she might bark for a minute at first, but she settles down really quickly and within an hour or two, she&#;s ready to let this new person pet her and become her friend. Harper stays home by herself while I am at work, which in the summertime means she is alone for about 7 hours. She hasn&#;t had any accidents while I am gone (and doesn&#;t have access to a yard- she just holds it). She&#;s an all around great dog, and as much as I love her, I can&#;t wait for her to find an amazing furever home to dote on her!" Harper is only an option for a home that has had a dog in the last 3 years. Her new home needs to understand that this is not a girl who will adjust to her new setting in hours. She will need a patient home that is willing to wait a week or two for her to settle in and trust them, and will give her the space and time to get used to her new surroundings and new people. Ideally, she will be given access to a crate and an x-pen where she can have her space to settle in. Once she trusts you, she will love you forever and be incredibly loyal and bonded, so it is worth the wait! If there are children they need to be over the age of .

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
