of her life and was at her owner's bedside when she passed away, with the aid of hospice care. She was protective of her owner until the end. Our rescue assists terminally ill people with finding new families for their pets, including after the pet owner has passed away, and we received a referral through hospice to take Molly into our care. Molly was well loved by her owner and her spirited, friendly demeanor showcases all the amazing care she received. She even came complete with an inch thick of veterinary paperwork - a long history of receiving routine, thorough veterinary care means 10-year-old Molly is a healthy girl. She is a sweet, affectionate girl that enjoys cuddling with you and cuddling under all the covers too, typical chihuahua behavior. She LOVES sitting in the sun. One tradition she had with her owner was to sit on the porch each evening and meet with the neighbors. Molly would take turns sitting in different laps and promptly went inside when she determined it was bedtime. Along with being a chihuahua and dachshund, Molly is part jack russell as well, as exhibited by her energy level and love for long walks. She needs an owner who can keep her active - she needs daily walks (a mile is easy for her!) for her physical and mental well-being. She is housebroken, walks well on a leash, is fixed, vaccinated, microchipped, and had full bloodwork. She needs a home without larger dogs as she really does not enjoy interactions with large dogs of any kind. She does currently live with another small dog successfully in her foster home. Here is what her foster mom says about her: When her foster family is home, Molly is a high-Velcro dog who likes to be in the same room as them and preferably cuddled up next to her foster mom. When they leave for work, she will settle into her crate with some treats. Molly enjoys her exercise, and walks 1-2 miles a day. She walks nicely on her leash and is learning that she doesn't need to bark at the bigger dogs who pass by. Some treats and redirection help encourage her to focus on her walk. The ideal home for Molly is committed to creating a stable routine for her and providing consistent exercise. A fenced yard is preferred, as Molly will run out of an open door. She lives happily with another small dog in her foster home, but no large dogs or cats please! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
