ur dogs are spayed/neutered, shots current (DHPP, Bordetella and Rabies where applicable), dewormed, flea and tick treated and microchipped. * If you are interested in a dog, please first read the biography on the dog (keep scrolling down for the bio!) and then go to our website, www.dpsrescue.com for an application. * We do not have a facility. All dogs live in foster homes. Arrangements to meet dogs occur after an approved application has been accepted. * We do not ship our dogs for any reason. * Our adoption fee is $400 for each dog/puppy. * If it is on a weekend of our adoptions, follow us on @DPSRescue on Twitter to get real time updates on our adoptions. We will also post at the end of the evening the names of those dogs who have been adopted: www.facebook.com/DPSRescue This dog will be at Palo Alto Pet Food Express on Saturday, January 7th from 1-4pm and Sunday, January 8th from 12-3pm or until adopted. However, we do meet with those who submit an application and are approved just prior to the event (by invitation only) and they are given the first opportunity to adopt. If you are interested in one of our dogs, we recommend filling out an application prior to the event to be considered. Applications submitted within 24 hours of the event may not necessarily be reviewed. Athena is quite possibly the happiest dog ever. She is a 1 year old Dachshund/JRT mix. She is a lover girl. She bonds instantly with her people. Athena is a total cuddle bug. She loves to curl up next to you and nap while you watch TV, and she's also great on leash during potty breaks. She loves meeting new people, is super friendly, is fine being petted by strangers, and is good with men. She'll even let you carry her around like a little baby. Athena is also very smart, so if you block off a portion of the house, you can bet she'll be trying to nose her way in to see what's so special about that hidden area! A sturdy doggy gate can keep her in areas where she's allowed, though. Athena knows how to use a doggie door and a potty pad, and is very close to being house trained. She figured out the doggie door situation in about 5 minutes, so she's a fast learner. Athena sleeps in her crate in your room at night, and, after a few whimpers (she would always rather be with you on the bed instead!), she'll settle down and not make a peep until morning. After a few days of learning what time you get up in the morning, Athena seems to adjust and wait patiently until you're ready to start the day with her! Now Athena has proven she really needs a doggy door. She seems to be more of a barker without one. She's not a good option for a condo or townehouse situation. She is not a barker when her people are home but if she is blocked in and can't get in and out, she gets stressed. She is an ideal dog to go to work with someone, to go RV'ing with someone, to be a Senior's dog who wants a constant companion... She's a good little eater, loves treats, and knows "sit." She also gets along well with other dogs, and even won over a grumpy Shih Tzu foster brother, who can be tough to make friends with! Despite being rescued from the shelter with a shattered pelvis that had already fused together before it could receive medical attention, she is amazingly able to walk, but with a limp or hop of her back hind leg. The vet who saw her during her time in foster remarked that it's "truly the tenacity of dogs and their own will to heal." Because of how her pelvis healed, Athena shouldn't be made to go on long walks or hikes. She shouldn't do forced exercise but rather just let her go at her pace and let her tell you when she needs a break. Even still, she can be super playful for short periods, loves toys, and loves to initiate play sessions with other doggies. She's a true little hero with an unbreakable spirit! We are looking to place Athena in a home where any children are over the age of 10. She is only an option for a home that has had a dog in the last 5 years. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. We want to make sure if you are interested in a dog that we have the dog at adoptions but that can only happen if you fill out an application ahead of time and are pre-approved. (Generally this must happen prior to the weekend) **If you are wanting to submit an application within 24 hours of an event, please print off the application and bring with you as well as submitting it. You may still submit it and if time and volunteers permit, we will contact you. Most applications submitted the weekend of adoptions are not responded to until after the adoption weekend.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
