s picture because he was having some issues and not ready to meet new people. This week I got the list of dogs that needed to have pics taken and Bilbo was on the list. I was told we'd do him last and to be prepared to be growled at. Since I had not seen him I was apprehensive about what kind of dog I was about to meet. I pictured a very large, highly excitable dog that I would have to be very cautious with. The door to the room opened and on-leash in walks little Bilbo. The exact opposite of what I had in mind. He was the perfect gentleman. We got along very well and he even ate cookies from my hand. Two year old Bilbo needs to be in a very structured, adult home. If you want to meet this little guy (We can't guarantee he won't growl at you.) call or visit RPC 207 743-8679. UPDATE ON "BO" 2/24/2018: We knew when little Bo arrived that he had suffered some kind of trauma to his tail. A visit to our veterinarian showed that there was nerve damage to the end of his tail and because of this, he would go after it when he felt the pain it created for him. It was recommended to remove the damaged portion of his tail which curved up over his back and occasionally would tap him on his back, making the problem even worse! Surgery and recovery is long behind him but the "behavior" or perhaps "phantom pain" remains. He will still occasionally growl and turn back to look at the tail that no longer exists. This little guy must have suffered for a long time with his pain! He sounds ferocious but has never reacted badly to anyone, only to himself. He should have a quiet, structured home where his focus on his tail can be directed away with positive reinforcement training. Before he came to RPC he had been put on different medications to alter his behaviors, but we found it only made him worse. Lots of good exercise and structure seem to work the best, If you can help this guy and bring him into your home for some much needed love, understanding of who he is and training, we would love to talk with you! He's a great little dog and needs a home of his own NOW! Call the shelter for more details and availability of this pet. 207 743-8679. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
