VERY SMART, WELL BEHAVED, MEDIUM ENERGY, LITTLE SHY!!! UPDATE 1/1/19: Luke, a black Pug/Dachshund (mix) came to us on 7/13/18 as a stray. He is 3 years old, 39 pounds, came to us in good condition, tested negative on 4DX test; seems well cared for. He has silky black ears, and huge brown eyes that often look a little bit worried. Luke lived in a home for three weeks recently and that enabled us to learn a LOT more about him. SENSITIVE and CAREFUL, he blossoms in a home filled with love. There are SO MANY POSITIVES with this little fella and I will list them below. - SHY at FIRST. Once he trusts you though, he LOVES cuddles and will even sleep in bed with you, if you allow it. If not, he will happily sleep in a nearby chair or crate. When strangers come to your home, he will disappear into another room and eventually creep into the area to meet them. - VERY SMART, WELL BEHAVED, MEDIUM ENERGY dog that loves to RUN sometimes (since he is still young). He is an IDEAL DOG for a calm, adult home that wants a little homebody to hang around with. He NEEDS a family that is familiar with shy dogs and will give him time to trust them. - EXCELLENT HOUSE MANNERS! Is house trained and good at telling his person when he needs to go potty, by barking and indicating at THE DOOR. - NEVER DESTROYS his toys, soft beds, cozy blankets, or household items. - LOVES to RIDE IN CARS and get cookies from bank tellers and drive up pharmacy windows. He accepts treats with a VERY GENTLE MOUTH and loves nursing treats out of a beehive Kong! - GOOD ON LEASH and walks right beside you. Wearing a collar with your phone number on it, and a well-fitting harness is something he should always do on walks. - likes MELLOW, non-pushy FEMALE DOGS. One of his girlfriends was a 9-pound Pug/Chihuahua and another was an 80-pound Yellow Lab. (If he is frightened by pushy dogs on a walk, he will hide behind his person.) - loves to RUN fast in a securely fenced yard—especially if his people are with him. He is an EXCELLENT climber and can climb stepped-up landscaping walls and various types of fencing. A 6-foot-tall privacy fence may suit him well, and/or a VISIBLE fence lined with Invisible Fencing. Regular, energetic leash walking (maybe even jogging) in a QUIET NEIGHBORHOOD may suit him BEST and is an excellent bonding experience. Even though he likes calm kids aged 8 and up, a calm home (without children) in a quiet neighborhood may suit him best. (Luke seems to worry about loud noises.) Since he is shy with new people, he will NOT go to strangers for help in getting back home, if he escapes. (Flower will tell you a story about that.) Luke is ideal for medium energy people who like to live quietly and want a sweet, well behaved, dog to hang out with them. He is NOT a social butterfly with strangers, but he is a very LOVING pet. Please contact Flower and Ed at ek.gkverizon or 434-361-0190 to learn more about Luke. After we interview a potential adopter, we will do a meet and greet, and home visit with Luke. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
