as of 3/6/2017): Hope is doing Awesome! She is now 70 pounds, she is 5 pounds away from her goal weight of 75 Pounds. Hope came in at 54 pounds and was scared of everything. She is now playing with her foster brother and sister. She loves to run and play outside, along with making sure her foster mom is in sight! Hardwood floors are still a little scary, but she is doing great! Hope is working on learning how to walk on leash, she never saw a leash until now and they scare her. Read Hope's Story: NEW UPDATE February 25: Hope is healing very well and gaining her Doberman beauty back and learning to be a house dobe again! UPDATE! Hope had surgery on February 6: , Surgery went well and we will not know for a couple of weeks if she will have to have more surgery. Please keep Hope in your thoughts and prayers as she heals from this invasive procedure! The Good news is that she has been busy putting weight on, getting healthy and learning that the world isn't so scary when you have so many people who love you! Hope found DRM in January to help her heal from a situation that wasn't the best for her, where she has parasites and is healing from wounds from a dober-sister who dominated her for the food they were fed jointly. Hope is undernourished, and has tested positive for lyme disease, is on a broad spectrum antibiotic to address any potential infection from her scars, and is being tested for parasites. She will also need to have surgery to have a canine removed and may possibly have to have a plate put in her jaw due to the severe infection and damage to the gum that has gone down into the bone. With all of this, Hope has made strides in her first week with DRM, gaining lots of strength, and will remain in our care until she is fully healed. Thank you to Hope's Hero's! The outpouring of support for special food and goodies for Hope has been amazing; if you are interested in helping Hope through her healing process, consider donating to help cover the vet bills that will be required to get her on the road to recovery. Donations can be made here using the donate button: http://dobermanrescueminnesota.com . Please put "Donation Hope" in the comments if you wish these funds to be dedicated to Hope's recovery. Please read all adoption steps and policies carefully on our website. http://dobermanrescueminnesota.com/adoption-steps/ Qualified adopters are within the approved adoption area, and Adopter will be requested to visit this foster dog at the foster family home. Our foster families are generally located within a 250 mile radius of Minneapolis, MN. All DRM dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, health checked, microchipped, dewormed, 4DX tested, and on monthly flea/tick and heartworm prevention.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
