not treated well at all but I have not let it daunt me. I have learned that I can be playful and have fun and can trust people too. I have a high energy level and will need plenty of exercise and play time. I have had some basic training using positive reinforcement and respond very well to that. I walk well on a harness or martingale collar. I am crate trained. I have a vivacious personality and am very expressive! I can live with other dogs but at this time I don’t actively play with them. If you are looking for a play mate for your dog I probably would not be the best choice but I can be a companion to a submissive dog. Requirements for a home for me (above the standard adoption requirements). · Prior Doberman experience is required. · Training with positive reinforcement is required. Must be patient but still able to show me the rules and work with me on them. · My new owner must not be a couch potato but be able to meet my exercise needs and energy level. UPDATE:I am in foster with a male and a female. I have really come to like my foster brother and just this week I have begun to play with him. He is a big boy but was very patient with me while I learned to trust him. You see, in my former home if I played with the other dog I got beaten so I needed to make sure it was ok and that I would not be hurt. I am better with a calm male than females but I am getting used to my foster sister as well. I am a smiler and a talker. Really if I had my way I’d have my own service staff but my foster parents aren’t too keen on that. I am a great girl with lots of love to give and I am VERY smart. I pick up on things quickly. Ask for me at www.doberescue-ne.org All of our dogs are current with all shots, are on heart worm preventative monthly and are neutered/spayed. All dogs are tail docked. All of the above Dobes are pure breed Dobermans unless otherwise noted. We hope you can find a place in your heart and your home for one of our rescue Dobes. Please Note: In most cases we require a fenced yard. We do not place our rescue dogs in homes with very young children (under the age of 8 years). We set these limitations, not because of aggression issues with our dogs, but because Dobermans are generally large, active dogs and can easily knock down, run over or easily trip a small child, causing a serious fall. Also, we reserve the right to refuse adoption for any reason. Our adoption area encompasses Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
