him, is having continued deterioration of his jaw bone. He had began having a very hard time eating and Dad has been accommodating him, but it has come to the point where he can't pick up food at all or hold it in his mouth well. His lower jaw is much shorter than his snout and now the distance is even worse. Today's X-ray showed that the bone around his surgical wires is crumbling. My options are to remove the left mandible, which I refuse to do; do surgery to rewire the jaw, which will likely cause even further bone crumbling possibly leaving us with a problem that can't be fixed or managed; or I can leave it alone and purée his food. Puréed food it is. I'll have to maybe spoon feed him as his tongue doesn't seem to be functioning well. Scrappy loves to eat and is very enthusiastic about it. He has a desire to eat and as long as he does I'll do whatever I can to help him thrive. That being said, quality vs quantity is on my mind. Even though at this time I'm hopeful I can manage Scrappy's diet, I won't allow him to slowly starve to death. Scrappy is now hospice. He has already lost some weight but there are several different things I can feed him and I have a high calorie recipe I'm going to try to get his weight back on. He will come to live with me and if someone who understands and accepts his needs would be interested in adopting him, I'm not opposed to it but we would have to have a mutual understanding on goals for Scrappy.

Ok, so he's no Kirk Douglas, but leading-man SCRAPPY does bear a striking resemblance to Sid the Sloth, star of the ICE AGE movies! This talented little love-nugget enjoys singing the songs of his people to express the happiness in his heart (see his performance video).
Scrappy earned his name by surviv ing a very sad life of neglect and abuse. Once rescued by ARTBAR his little jaw was reset and most of his damaged teeth were removed (thus his silly uncontainable tongue!). Scrappy is estimated to be about 10 yrs old and just 15 lbs, but he still likes to be the big man on campus! He's currently fostered in a home with multiple dogs and doing great, but Scrappy can be slightly dog-selective and bossy, so for this reason he'd probably enjoy a life of adoration as an only dog or as a sibling to mellow, submissive dogs.
Because of his storied past, and due to the fact that he's missing many teeth, Scrappy gets cranky when he fears others might take his food from him (we've all been there!). For that reason we'd love to find a big-hearted soul who would be willing to hand feed him at first to help him conquer his food worries!

We are located in rural southwestern West Virginia and we seek assistance from rescues and adopters in northeastern states and sponsors nationwide. We are one of several rescues in the southern portion of the state and are always interested in collaborating with other rescues in our area to save lives. Volunteers are needed to foster dogs and drive on transports. The area we service is very rural and most of the animals we take in have lived their lives outdoors, though we do sometimes get surrendered indoor pets. We rescue from shelters, local strays, locally injured animals, and owner surrenders and get them the medical care they need. Donations are the lifeline of our rescue work.
Rescues: We have transport available to northeastern states. PA-based rescues, we are PA licensed. If you have not pulled from us before, please submit our rescue application and we'll be in touch soon. If you are not located in the northeast, you will need to arrange transport beginning in Lenore, WV.

Adopters: Adoption Fee: $250. Transport fee for adopters further than 100 miles from Lenore WV: $50. All dogs are altered, vaccinated, 4DX tested, wormed, and flea treated prior to adoption. Our adoption process includes an online application, vet reference, home visit, meet-n-greet with the animal and your family/current pets, adoption contract and adoption fee. Should you ever need to give up one of our animals, they must be returned to us. We ALWAYS take our pets back.

Weekend volunteer driver help is needed between Charleston WV and northeastern states. Timing is early morning in Charleston to later in the night up in New England. If you would like to help us transport dogs to our northern partner rescues, please submit our driver application and we'll be in touch soon. We can also use local weekday transport help in this area for moving dogs from shelters to vets to foster homes.
