s true, I'm the most cuddly dog you'll ever meet. I am very shy at first but once I warm up to you... I'm all love and snuggles. I'm 46lbs but I act like a 5lb Chihuahua because my favorite place is in my human's lap. My foster mom calls me snuggle-bug. (She also calls me goof ball, peanut and wiggle-butt but that's another story.) Besides snuggling... I am ALL puppy, full of energy, and love to go 60-mph racing around, coercing the other dogs to play with me. If you're active and want some company... I'm your dog. I love car rides and dog treats at drive-thrus. I do need to have another dog in the home because they make me feel more relaxed and teach me to trust. I had a rough start at life, so I can be very nervous in new situations (for example, stairs were scary for a while, rooms with ceiling fans were nerve-wracking, and loud groups of people made me tremble... but I'm a much braver dog now). A patient owner and another dog would be very really comforting. I'm house-trained now. My foster parents have dog doors at their house, so I'm used to letting myself in-and-out to a fenced yard and I don't have any accidents in the house anymore. It's okay if you don't have doggie doors... but I'll need some long walks and keeping on a schedule so I don't have any accidents. I can be a bit of an escape artist so a tall fence is best. I am not good with kids, they really terrify me. I'm in a quiet house now with no kids visiting. I have never been kenneled because being alone really scares me... I just really love being with my humans. I don't like to be away from my family for long and can chew up the occasional shoe. But nothing major. If you're retired or work from home, that would be so perfect. I do well with a dog-savvy cats (as you can see from my picture)... my Siamese cat-sister and I chase each other sometimes or I just ignore her when she stalks me around corners. I am very smart and catch on to new things quick. I know how to "sit", "get down", "find it", and "kiss"! I rarely bark and I take redirection well when I do bark and mom tells me to stop. I am very motivated by treats and they help me to learn new things. I am very gentle when I take treats. I still need some more training and I am learning how to act on the leash. I just have a lot of energy to burn. My ideal day would be going for a nice long walk and then hanging out with my family snuggling on the couch. If that sounds like a great day to you, let's meet! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
