We know Gentry loves to play fetch, will even drop the ball right back in your lap....did we mention what a polite gentleman he is?! He also has no food agression issues, and takes his treats ever so gently from your hand - again....total gentleman! Gentry is a great house guest - never making any messes (bathroom or otherwise) so he is an all around great guy wanting to be your best friend! Apply to adopt him today and a volunteer with set up a meet-n-greet! 12/21/23 Update: Gentry has been in a foster home for a couple months now. We want to share a few great things that we have learned about this boy while he's been in a home setting. His foster mom has told us that he is a great rider in the car. He does well with her indoor/outdoor cats. He loves to play with her two dogs - both Golden Retrievers, but did meet another dog that he wasn't too fond of, so any potential adopter that has a dog at home already will need to be prepared for a meet-n-greet with both dogs before adopting. His fantastic foster mom said Gentry REALLY enjoys running around and safely playing in her fenced-in yard, so much so that we feel this is something Gentry needs in his forever home to be the happiest version of himself, and he would likely need to stay on leash at all other times to stay safe. Gentry also doesn't appear to be afraid of storms. We love getting to know our dogs (cats too!) more - and what better way to learn these things than while in a foster home?? Meet Gentry! This handsome boy came to us as a local stray through the City of Marengo Pound. After never being reclaimed, he has made himself at home under our care until he is able to find his new forever home. Gentry has been a pleasure to get to know - he loves being outdoors, being snuggled & attention from people! He can take a bit to warm up to strangers (especially men), but once he is comfortable and knows he is in good loving hands - he is a true gentle sweetheart. Gentry has been brought up-to-date on his vaccinations, microchipped, and had his neuter surgery. Having all of this complete means he is ready to officially begin his search for his forever home! If you are interested in meeting or potentially adopting Gentry, please complete an online adoption application found on our website. Once the application is submitted, a volunteer will be in contact for the next steps of the adoption process. The adoption application can be found on .wesavepets.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
