sad story, his first owner was unstable and unfortunately beat him. Pike needs a person who is confident (but not aggressive) and will become a firm but gentle leader for him. He is a sweet, handsome boy who has a kind, goofy way about him. Just needs some time and patience. He is very smart and inquisitive. Only Positive reinforcement training may be used with this gentle giant Pike is currently in our Prison Dog Training program. He is learning lots of new skills and stealing the hearts of his trainers. He is a wonderful guy, who needs a home where he is the only pet. He may be ok in a home with an older, calmer, medium to large dog. He is not a big fan of very hyper or overly active dogs, it makes him a bit anxious. No cats, No small dogs, and No kids. UPDATES FROM THE PRISON ON PIKE Pike – Is adjusting well and is accepting of the new team member that moved into his room. He loves to play and loves to have his belly rubbed. He had a bath, ears cleaned, teeth brushed and his flea and tick medication on Thursday. He is brushed daily. Mastered commands: yes, look, sit, stand, down, finish, heal/leash, shake, other paw, front and swing. UPDATE:Pike – is becoming more confident and relaxed. Correcting him is more constant and predictable. He is much more socialized and obeys commands from strangers. He is still hesitant around men with beards but will allow them to pet him. UPDATE:Pike – Loves to play and he also loves people. He is very proud of the shake command! Not sure what it is about lights but he seems to get consumed with them. Wants to chase them! Someone must have had a laser light for him to chase. He still shows aggression toward high energy dogs. Still working on eliminating his mouthing during play. It started out about a nine and is now about 2 or 3. Pike is brushed daily, had his teeth brushed and nails trimmed. UPDATE:Pike – Doing well at heal training. Only slight corrections needed when he gets distracted. Shows some aggression toward high energy dogs. He loves to carry a fetch stick. Doesn’t mouth your arm or clothing when he has his stick. He is brushed daily, had a bath, ears cleaned, nails trimmed and teeth brushed. UPDATE:Pike – Likes to be groomed, no signs of aggression. Off leash in the pen he wants to play rough, working on that, he is showing some signs of separation anxiety and we are working on that as well. He loves being around people and we’ve seen no aggression toward men with hats. He is quickly learning commands. He does not like to be around high energy dogs! He has no patients for them. He was bathed, weighed in at 96.4 lbs, teeth brushed, ears cleaned, nails trimmed and brushed on a daily basis. — at Chequamegon Humane Association.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
