the adoption application for Sweet Pea, please visit our website belowhttp://www.coastalgsr.org/dog_profile.php?ID=21480&name=Sweet PeaSweet Pea is about 2 years old and a very special girl. Sweet Pea was born with a condition which causes her to have limited mental and physical capacities. She has hydrocephalus, which is 'water on the brain'. In Sweet Pea's case, most of the brain tissue has been replaced with fluid. While there is nothing that can be done to reverse her condition, she is stable and has a good quality of life. She is on anti-seizure medication as a precaution, but has not had a seizures in a long time. She has the enthusiasm of a puppy but the walk and gait of an older dog. She is easy to walk on a leash and happy to go out and about. She is able to learn things, it just takes her a little more time than normal dogs. She gets along with other dogs and even cats, as she wants to be friends with all animals! She lived in a home with older children for a short time and had not issues, but currently lives in a foster home with both small and large dogs and gets along with all of them. She has no problems going up and down stairs and navigates both inside and out without any issue. She also loves to play with toys and chases after balls. Sweet Pea needs the right home with someone who will accept her for who she is. She would also do best in a home with other dogs with whom she can play and who will also provide her with a good role model. Her adopters will also have to be careful with medications that are used, as some things are known to trigger seizures and these should be avoided. While we have no idea what her prognosis is nor how long she will live, Sweet Pea is a happy and healthy dog and is enjoying every moment given her. She is thriving in her foster home, but we would love to see her find a family who will love her forever, no matter how long that is. Could you be the family who will look past her limitations and see her gentle nature and loving soul? The minimum adoption donation for adults is $300 and the adoption donation for puppies is $400 - $500. This amount only partially covers the cost of veterinary care, boarding fees, and other miscellaneous expenses involved in the temporary care and adoption of our dogs and is tax deductible. The adoption donation provides that all dogs will be spayed or neutered, receive current vaccinations, and are microchipped. If not, arrangements will be made on an individual basis ( i.e., puppies who will need to be altered by 6 mos old). Special consideration may be given to those willing to adopt older dogs or dogs with physical problems.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
