n, including Frequently Asked Questions. Hello everyone, my name is Amelia. I am a 7-month-old puppy. I can confirm that I am all puppy. I have lots of energy. I love to run, play ball and chase every butterfly that passes by. I found my way to the rescue in April right before Easter. I am told that my big ears make me look like the Easter Bunny. I have never met the Easter Bunny, is he nice? I used to have my own family but they decided that they no longer wanted me because I have a bum leg and the expenses were going to be too much. Minutes before I was scheduled to run across the ‘rainbow’ bridge some sweet angel decided that I deserved a chance to live and grow up to be a good dog. I have been living with a wonderful foster family that has 3 other dogs and 2 cats. I have tried to find those cats but they play hide and seek better than I do. I am still learning manners. I will need someone who can take time to help train me. I have just had a major surgery they c all FHO surgery. I don’t know exactly what that means but the surgery helped fix my bum leg. The lucky family that sees fit to love me will have to commit to some additional vet follow up s and possibly some physical therapy for my leg. I don’t really see what’ s wrong with my leg. I have really WOWED my doctors – they say I am really healing fast. I am still learning to be crate trained. I really don’t like the crate but I know that is where I get treats and get fed and sometimes sleep in the crate. I am learning to leash walk. I am house broken and know a few basic commands. I correct easily but sometimes I think my name is ‘get back here’, ‘no’ or ‘stop that’. But then I hear my name Amelia and I know that my foster mom just forgot for a moment what my name was. She just had a milestone birthday but we won’t say how old she is. A lady never reveals her age. I love playing with other dogs but if my new family has other dogs they need to be patient with me. I can be a little mouthy but I know that is not good manners. My foster mom tells me all the time how beautiful I am and that I have some gorgeous eyes. My foster mom also says I am one confident dog and that I know what I want. I usually work hard to get it too. I am ready to have my forever home. If you want to be my family please work with your adoption coordinator. If you are not yet approved to adopt but are interested in adopting me, please fill out an application at southeastgermanshepherdrescue.com. I am currently being fostered in Cornelius NC. Our adoption process consists of a telephone interview, a call to your veterinarian and a home visit. If you have any questions about the adoption process please contact sgsrescue@gmail.com .

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
