e information, including Frequently Asked Questions. Bear is a 2 yr. old, big, fluffy sweetheart. Everything in the house was new to him so we believe he was kept outside but he is quickly learning how to behave in the house and learning his boundaries. Bear weighs in at 90 lbs but he is a big baby and gets along with everyone he meets. He currently lives with 2 small dogs and a female GSD, he is scared to death of the little Pomeranian, who is a grumpy old man and does not like his personal space invaded. He does still need some socialization with other dogs as he barks at them, not in an aggressive way, because he does not know what to do. He is very smart and learns quickly, he loves to learn new commands, Bear has a lot of puppy in him so he does jump up on you and is still a bit mouthy but he has gotten much better with some rules. Bear has plenty of energy but not over the top, a good walk once a day and maybe even throwing the ball for a few minutes are fine for him, he loves his ball. He may do okay with cats, I think he would be scared of a dog savvy cat but he would bark at it and be annoying to the cat, it is probably best there are no cats. I would not recommend small children since he is a very big boy and can be like a bull in a China shop at times. He is housebroken as long as he is let out on a regular basis; he has had a couple of accidents in the house but mainly in the beginning. He is crated trained but will protest for a bit when you first put him in, he has been sleeping in my room the last few nights and has been fine but I would not trust him to free roam while I'm gone. Bear wants to be with you at all times and is all up in your business with whatever you are doing. He is an amazingly sweet, gentle giant but he does need direction and will need a strong leader to keep him in line, he will test you and try to get away with things. We will require a training program. With the proper training he will be a great companion. He is being Fostered in Dinwiddie, Virginia. If you think he would be a good addition to your family , please contact your adoption coordinator. Or if you’re in our adoption territory of VA, NC or MD, you can complete an application at www.southeastgermanshepherdrescue.com Our adoption process consists of a telephone interview, a call to your veterinarian and a home visit. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
