ation, including Frequently Asked Questions. HI! My name is Cassie. I am 18 month s old and a super sweet girl . I am happy all the time and my tail never stops wagging. I am housebroken and never chew things up (except tennis balls). I will go in my crate when asked, but I’m not crazy about it so I bark a little bit when I’m in there. We are working on that! I like to play fetch and I am crazy about belly rubs. I am very energetic, but not “hyper”. I currently live with my foster mom and dad and my two canine foster siblings. I’ve only been here for a couple weeks and I have already adjusted to the family. I never used to go on walks, but my foster family walks me every single day. Sometimes we go twice in one day which I LOVE!! As soon as I see someone putting on their shoes, I run to the door because I am sure that means we are going for a walk. Sometimes it means we are going for a ride in the car which is even better! Because my old family never took me for walks, I am learning how to walk on a leash without pulling or wandering. My fosters are constantly saying “heel” and I guess it means to walk beside them because they always say “good girl” when I do that. But there is just so much to see and sniff outside that it is hard to focus all the time! I had an issue with another dog recently, so my foster parents think that I would do best in a home with no other animals. I haven’t been around any children yet, but I am a little mouthy so I would probably do better with adults or older kids . I do jump a little bit, but listen when someone tells me to get down. I know a few basic commands but would really like to learn more. I am VERY smart and happy to please. I would do well in any home as long as my fosters promise to love me and take me on walks. Cassie is currently being fostered in Charlotte, NC. If you live in MD, VA, or NC and would like to have Cassie as a permanent member of your family, please contact your adoption coordinator. If you aren’t already approved, please complete an adoption application at our website, .southeastgermanshepherdrescue . Our adoption process consists of a telephone interview, a call to your veterinarian and a home visit. If you have any questions about the adoption process please contact sgsrescuegmail .

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
