ore information, including Frequently Asked Questions. ~~Hi My name is Cody and I'm a very sweet, energetic and very smart 3 year old male. My previous owner dumped me in the shelter because he could no longer afford to care for me. Thanks to SGSR I came to live with my foster family about a month ago and I am so happy!! When I first got there I was shy but it didn't take long for me to start showing my outgoing personality and my voice! I love to talk. I have 2 foster siblings, who are also German Shepherds, that I love to play with. They love to play ball but I like to carry the ball around and lay with it between my legs. I would love to have a rough and tumble mate! I have so much fun playing with my foster siblings! My foster parents say I would be the perfect dog for camping and hiking because I love to lay by a campfire and go on walks. My foster mom walks me and one of my siblings at the same time so I guess I'm pretty good on leash and I have very good house manners. My siblings and I are not crated at night but I am crate trained and don't mind spending some time in my crate. We go to work with my foster dad every day so we get to ride in the truck and meet and greet people all day long. Did I mention that I like to be close to my human? My foster dad calls me a Velcro dog. I don't like loud noises, when it thunders and I'm outside, I run to the door to get in where it's safe! My foster parents don't think I would do well with small pets or cats but children are fine. They also say I need a 6 foot fence. Sheesh....I was only trying to get that wascally wabbit out of my yard! I am learning basic commands and doing very well. Give me a treat and I'll do anything you want me to do! I am being fostered outside of Greensboro, NC. If you would like to offer me my furever home, please work with your adoption coordinator. If you do not yet have an adoption coordinator, please fill out an application at southeastgermanshepherdrescue.com. Our adoption process consists of a telephone interview, a call to your veterinarian and a home visit. If you have any questions about the adoption process please contact sgsrescue@gmail.com .

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
