e information, including Frequently Asked Questions. Hercules, Hercules, Hercules! This gorgeous, 2-year-old boy is a laid back ball of fluff! He is not your typical, rambunctious 2-year-old, but don’t let that sweet face fool you! Although GSDs are known for their smarts, Hercules seems to have been blessed with above-average intelligence (he can manipulate knobs to open doors)! Hercules is a Carolina boy, and he joined SGSR after his owner passed away and the family was unable to care for him. During his time at the shelter, where he was a staff & volunteer favorite, he was very much a gentleman and was allowed free roam in the kennel area. He currently lives with other dogs and cats. He is learning how to play with balls and toys instead of chasing squirrels and rabbits, and he is quickly learning basic commands. He does have a high prey drive and will try to climb fences to get at squirrels, so constant supervision is a must! Although he means no harm, he does chase the cats in his foster home, so a home without felines would probably be best. Hercules loves to cuddle with his people and is very much a velcro (lap!) dog. As with most GSDs, he loves nothing more than to be with his people. He walks well on the leash, although he is a bit nervous with the loud sounds of traffic, likely from not getting out in pubic much in his previous home. He is house-trained, crate trained and has been well-behaved at recent SGSR meet and greet events. Hercules isn’t a big fan of storms and will retreat to his crate to hang out before and during a storm. He is fine with other dogs after proper introductions, is (of course) neutered and up-to-date on all vaccinations. He is slowly learning how to play with other dogs but ignores his foster brother even when he pulls his tail, trying to get him to play. Lots of socializing with new sights, sounds and other dogs will be key to him becoming a relaxed, well-rounded GSD. In fact, his adoption contract will include an obedience training clause. If you are interested in making Hercules part of your family, you can contact your adoption coordinator. Or, if you are in our adoption territory (VA, NC or MD), you can complete an adoption application at www.southeastgermanshepherdrescue.com . Hercules is being fostered in Virginia Beach, VA. Our adoption process consists of a telephone interview, a call to your veterinarian and a home visit. If you have any questions about the adoption process please contact sgsrescue@gmail.com .

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
