ore information, including Frequently Asked Questions. Hi! My name is Lexi. I'm a 3-year-old, 70lb female, with AKC paperwork. I don’t really know what that means, but my foster Dad said some people think that makes me fancy. I love my foster Dad very much and will need to go to a house where I will have a Dad to wrap around my paw. When I came to SGSR I had a bum hip that hurt all the time. SGSR got my hip fixed with a fancy surgery called an FHO, and I have healed very well. I outrun both of my bigger and younger foster brothers, and I require a 6' fence because I will jump anything lower. Sometimes foster Mom has to think about which leg I had surgery on because you can’t even tell anymore! I don't mind playing with other dogs my size or larger, but I don't like to share and want all of the food, toys, and humans to myself. I should not be with cats or small animals because even though foster Mom says they aren’t toys, I am convinced they are. For these reasons, I would probably be best as an only dog where I can be queen of the castle. I do have foster brothers that I like to play with though, so depending on the dog, I would consider having one sibling. I can be trusted with small humans- I love to give people who are at my level all the kisses they can handle I've been out socializing and learning how to make friends but I still bark really loud to let everyone know I'm there. Because I’m still getting used to being a social butterfly and learning how to introduce myself, I would like to have someone experienced who can help me be the best I can be, or someone who is willing to agree to take me to some training. I’m really smart though, and I do know some basic commands like “sit,” “stay,” “down,” “no,” “drop it,” and “bed.” I sit & shake for treats and take them gently. I love lounging in my crate, but I can be trusted in the house as long as I have some toys to keep me busy. I will protect my house all hours of the day and night, so expect me to bark at the first sound of footsteps near my door or cars in my driveway. I have some old scarring on my lungs that we don’t know for sure what caused it, but it doesn’t affect me much. I don't need medicine or anything, but sometimes when I exercise too hard, I cough a little, so I’m probably not going to be running any marathons, and I shouldn't live with any smokers. I am happy going on walks, running around the yard, riding in the car, playing with my toys, or just laying down and snuggling with you on the couch – I am a GREAT snuggler! I have so much love to give! I am being fostered in Baltimore, MD. If you are interested in me, please contact your adoption coordinator. If you live in NC, VA or MD (yes, these are the ONLY states we adopt to due to our volunteer base...no, we DON'T make exceptions, and yes, we are sure you would be a SUPER adopter but our volunteers are already overwhelmed with just these three states :)), you can complete an application to possibly adopt me www.southeastgermanshepherdrescue.com . Please be sure to read our FAQ page and Adoption Tab before completing the application. Our adoption process consists of a telephone interview, a call to your veterinarian and a home visit. If you have any questions about the adoption process please contact sgsrescue@gmail.com .

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
