ore information, including Frequently Asked Questions. ~~Hello there! My name is Malcolm and I might be the sweetest boy out there! I’m a 2 ½ year old, 95-pound fluffy goofball. My foster Mom thinks I may be half German Shepherd and half Husky given my tail, but regardless of my lineage, I’m 100% love. I’m a pretty simple guy. I love people (of all shapes and sizes) though I am still working on my manners around little ones. While I’m not mouthy, I’m not always great at knowing where my body is all the time so I may bump into little ones and knock them over, however, I’ll make up for it with lots of adoring kisses. Have a mentioned I also love tennis balls? I can chase them for HOURS at a time at full speed so please make sure I have lots of water for breaks! I make my foster mom laugh all the time because I am a head-tilting-fool . . . almost anytime you speak to me I will tilt my head, it’s pretty adorable! I’m relatively submissive with other dogs and I play pretty well with other dogs, but my prey drive is high and really small dogs confuse me, I sometimes think they are rabbits and chase them. However, if you have a ball I don’t care about other dogs, just give me the ball!! Given my prey drive cats are an absolute NO! I walk pretty well on a leash though it sometimes takes me a minute or two to settle down and get into your groove but I’m a fast learner. In the house I am a very trusted boy. I don’t get on the furniture unless you invite me, I’m house-broken and crate trained though I don’t need one at all and my foster mama gives me free reign of the house. I am the definition of a Velcro dog. I love my people and bond to them very quickly, you’ll never feel lonely with me around. I’d love to find a forever home with a big family to accept all the love I have to give! If you think you are the right family for me, please speak with your adoption coordinator. I'm being fostered in Raeford, NC. Our adoption process consists of a telephone interview, a call to your veterinarian and a home visit. If you have any questions about the adoption process please contact sgsrescue@gmail.com .

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
