e information, including Frequently Asked Questions. Massie is a beautiful 4-5 year old, black & red, long-coat German Shepherd of medium stature, weighing around 65 pounds. Her previous family surrendered her to SGSR when they moved and were unable to take her with them. She has an incredibly sweet personality, and is your textbook definition of a velcro dog who will follow you around from room to room and take a snooze at your feet wherever you end up. She has a moderate energy level and is happy to relax when her people are relaxing, and be ready to get out for an adventure anytime. During the day, she is crated when her foster family is away, and is ok in her crate for around 8 hours. Her favorite activity is running around the yard with her GSD foster brother and the neighbor dog. They can run and chase for hours. She is getting the idea of playing fetch, but has not yet mastered the retrieve. Toys are great fun for Massie, especially ones which she can rip the little squeakers out of. Massie eats a specific diet of Acana Pork and Squash formula, as she has previously experienced sensitivity to other foods. She responds great to this diet and has not had any issues. Upon coming into the rescue, it was shared with SGSR that this was the food she needed to eat as to avoid digestive upset and skin issues. She loves chow time and will go “lockdown” in her crate to eat. She is good around children and other dogs of all sizes. Her foster family has a few chickens, which she respects, also. Massie is respectful of cats, as well. At her foster home, there is a 4-foot fence, which is suitable. She did not have a fence at her previous home, and does have a reliable recall; therefore a setting without a fence, or with an invisible fence could potentially be ok for her. Massie knows basic commands such as sit, crate, down, and come. She is very sharp and is quick to learn, so could be taught many more things, but has the foundation on what it takes to be a good, well-mannered dog. She’s learning to be respectful when walking on a leash, and responds well to a corrective collar. She will pull a bit when starting out on the walk, but then calms down and nicely walks on a loose lead. When encountering other dogs or walkers, she can try and be protective by barking, but is easily corrected and learning this is not an acceptable behavior. She is not aggressive during these encounters, simply alerting her human and the other humans of her presence. Overall, Massie is a very loving, laid back, tolerant, and level-headed dog, whose big sweet eyes and soft fluffiness will melt your heart. If you are an approved adopter and interested in Massie, please contact your adoption coordinator. If you are not yet approved and in NC, VA or MD, you can complete an application at www.southeastgermanshepherdrescue.com (be sure to read the FAQ section). Massie is being fostered in Newport News, VA. Our adoption process consists of a telephone interview, a call to your veterinarian and a home visit. If you have any questions about the adoption process please contact sgsrescue@gmail.com .

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
