ore information, including Frequently Asked Questions. Hi everyone my name is Onyx. I am approximately 5 years old and a handsome all black German Shepherd Dog. I was surrendered in April 2016, at no fault of my own, by my previous owner. Luckily Southeast German Shepherd Rescue picked me up fast and found someone to take care of me until I find my forever home. I am a big boy, weighing 98 pounds, and looking for my forever family. I am looking for a home where I can be the only male dog. I am OK with girl dogs if they are OK with me. I don’t mind little dogs, but sometimes I forget how big I am. Cats are fascinating to me, so I need to be around a dog saavy cat that can put me in my place when necessary. But again, I would shine brightly being the only animal in the house. I love people, especially men, but will come up and lean on anyone. I will be your shadow. I am a smart boy, I know basic commands like "sit", "stay", "down", "shake" and "speak". I like to bark to let strangers know that I am the protector of my domain! Health wise, I’m up to date on all of my shots and neutered. My foster family recently put me on a glucosamine regimen to make sure my hips and joints stay healthy since I am such a big guy. I pull a bit on a leash, but my foster mom and trainer are working on teaching me how to walk nicely. I can get really excited when I see someone on a bike or another dog walking, so I need someone who can take the time and teach me how to act appropriately. I also love to cuddle on the couch, if you don’t mind my big head on your lap, I can lay down and watch a whole movie with you. I love to play with toys, but I don’t know how to share with other animals, but I love to play with people. If you're interested in adopting me, and are in SGSR's adoption territory of VA, NC or MD, please fill out an application or contact your adoption coordinator. thanks for reading about me. Love, Onyx. Oh, I'm being fostered in Virginia Beach, VA. Our adoption process consists of a telephone interview, a call to your veterinarian and a home visit. If you have any questions about the adoption process please contact sgsrescue@gmail.com .

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
