or more information, including Frequently Asked Questions. My name is Sugar. I got my name because when I was originally rescued at age 1, the volunteers said my disposition was as sweet as sugar. My family agreed and thus, the name Sugar stayed. I am a beautiful, 3 year-old, black and silver German Shepherd. 3 is a great age for shepherds as they are still young and playful but also content to chill out with their family. Like most German Shepherds, I want to be with my people. I live with 2 small humans that let me sleep on their bed with them which is wonderful. I'm also happy to chill by my foster mom on the floor by her bed as the big humans don't let me on the furniture. I am a working dog and thus, love being worked - whether that work is learning a new skill or going for a walk. I love to play chase whether it's a ball or another active dog to whom I've been properly introduced. My humans say I seem to have a prey drive but I will respond to commands while walking - although I wish they'd let me have fun racing a squirrel or two. I live with another dog and sometimes we foster puppies. He tends to ignore them but I love letting them crawl over me and am very tolerant of their puppy tendencies. I've lived with another dog for the last 2 years and we are used to sharing toys, food and people. I will tend to wiggle my nose into your arm if I feel another dog is getting my share of the love to remind you that I crave it too. Once you acknowledge me, I am content to lay down. People say that I am a very smart dog and want to show it. The more consistency in working with me on the commands, the happier that I am because I like pleasing my people - and earning some treats as that is a big motivator for me. Speaking of people, I love them, especially my people. I love the people in my house and anyone that else that I see they welcome into their home. I love my people so much and feel that it's my job to protect them. They say it is best for me to be kept in "place" until I see that my family is ok with visitors. For that reason, I would be a great fit for a person or family that does not have a revolving door of daily guests. If you want a loyal, smart and loving companion, please come meet me. Who doesn't need a little extra Sugar in their life? I am being fostered in Fort Mill, SC. If you live in NC, MD or VA and would like to make Sugar a part of your family please contact your adoption coordinator. If you are not yet approved please complete an adoption application at our website .southeastgermanshepherdrescue. Our adoption process consists of a telephone interview, a call to your veterinarian and a home visit. If you have any questions about the adoption process please contact sgsrescuegmail .

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
