ht should be 75-80 pounds, looks like she will be going on a diet! The vet also recommends a Help Em Up Harness to assist with stairs. Sweet Senior Lady Seeks Retirement Home Hi I’m Thora! I am looking for a quiet, comfy home to live out my senior years--not too many stairs please! I love my humans and prefer to be with them rather than other dogs. I don’t like sharing my space or my humans with other dogs-- I can be a little alpha you know. I love to snuggle on the sofa with my humans and sometimes I like to throw toys around to show off for my foster mom. I am house and crate-trained but prefer not to be in a crate. I promise I am trustworthy in the house! I have been around cats and don’t pay much attention to them, but for some reason they are often scared of me. My foster mom says I can’t be around small furry pets because I might mistake them for snacks. Like many older pups, I have some age-related health problems. I don’t see or hear well, not much at all in fact. I have weak hips so stairs can be difficult for me. I have started taking a daily joint supplement and will be going to the vet this week to get some anti-inflammatory medication. Also, I am heartworm positive and take monthly heartworm medication. I will need to be on these supplements and medications for the rest of my life. I hope you can look past these small things and see that I’m a great companion! My foster mom has a few things to say too. Thora is about 10 years old and 90 pounds. She needs to watch her weight to avoid putting extra stress on her hips. Thora is just as sweet as she can be and loves all humans but needs supervision around small children. Due to her vision problems, she sometimes bumps into things and could inadvertently knock down a child. Thora is fine with other dogs out in the yard and in limited doses as long as they are respectful, but would ultimately do best as an only dog or with one large dog, preferably an older male. Thora is being fostered near Front Royal, Virginia. Approved adopters can contact their caseworker or email info@shenandoahrescue.org to contact her foster mom. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
