reservation where I was part of a litter of unwanted puppies. Can you imagine no one wanting my mama, adorable siblings and me? Well some people thought that was crazy so they helped us get into loving rescues and Help A Dog Smile chose me because I have some special needs! They think I’m a Black Labrador / German Shepherd mix, 4-month-old puppy but don’t let those breeds fool you, I’m a petite little girl. I may be about 35-40 pounds when fully grown. I am a very good natured, sweet and submissive. At my foster mommy’s house I live with 5-month-old Chihuahua puppies and we all get along great! We all have a nice yard to run around in and I am starting to use the doggy door too. I am a quiet puppy. When all the other dogs bark I usually go under the couch and appreciate quite time. My foster mom says I am pretty smart too. I pick up on commands after one or two times. I love to give puppy kisses, play with puppies and toys, and chew on carrots. Now about the thing that makes me so special. I was born with a rare heart defect. This means I may live a shorter life than most dogs. I have seen a doggie cardiologist a few times and I’m not a candidate for surgery whatever that means. Thank goodness because it sounds scary! My foster mommy reminds me that the most important thing is that I have a happy full life with a loving family even if its a short one. There isn’t really anything special that you would have to do for me other than to love me like a normal dog. I take some medicine two times a day (which I love because it tastes like chicken!). I would do best in a house with smaller dogs to play with and/or with an older female dog to help guide me. I need a home where I can be loved and cherished daily as a family member and given lots of hugs and kisses. If you can give me the life I so richly deserve, and live in the Phoenix area please apply! I have had my vaccines. I’m also spayed and microchipped. If you are interested in making me a permanent member of your family please fill out our online application: http://www.helpadogsmile.org/adopt/application. My adoption fee is $250.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
