ss started. Visit our FAQ webpage for commonly asked questions about our adoption/foster process. Upton is a German Shepherd mix puppy. We are still working on putting some weight on him and he is still growing a bit, but he won't be as big as a German Shepherd. We don't have an exact age for him, but he is somewhere around 6 months old. Upton will need a very patient adopter. As is typical with puppies, he can be very mouthy. With him, however, he has the potential to leave bruises or nip to the point that it really hurts. He'll need a very patient owner who can work on proper training with him. Because of the potential for injury with his biting, we also are looking for a home without young children. None of this is done in an aggressive manner, but his playful biting has left bruises on his foster mom and we wouldn't want it to happen to a child! He also sometimes grabs a forearm in the mouth and pulls on it in a playful manner, but can still be painful. Other than his mouthy / biting issues, Upton is a real sweetheart! He loves playing with the other dogs in his foster home and is submissive to them. His energy and rough play style might be a bit too much for some dogs, but he would really enjoy having another dog around that likes to play. He also really likes to cuddle, with both dogs and humans. He also has excellent leash manners and would do great going for long walks with his new family! Upton is doing great recently with his potty training. He has had a few accidents, but is really getting the hang of it. He uses a dog door in his foster home and there will always be an adjustment period with a new home, so please plan on least a few accidents as he gets settled! He is also being crate trained. He isn't a big fan of his crate and will sometimes try to avoid going in it, but he has never made any escape attempts and he does not cry or bark when he is in there. He settles down quickly in there at bedtime and when his foster parents go to work. If you'd like to meet Upton, please fill out an application and you will be contacted! Last Day Dog Rescue now microchips all animals before adoption. Microchips are implanted between the animals shoulder blades and are a permanent form of identification. The microchips are registered to Last Day Dog Rescue with the adopter's info added once adopted. If the animal is ever lost and slips his/her collar/tags the microchip allows the finder to know who to contact if scanned for a microchip. Animals MUST still have a collar with tags on at all times. Per our contract, we take all our animals back if for any reason you can't keep your adopted animal. The Petfinder system requires that we choose a predominant breed or breed mix for our animals. Visual breed identification in animals is unreliable so for most of the animals we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each animal as an individual and will do our best to describe each of our animals based on personality, not by breed label. Thank you for looking through our list of animals needing forever homes and choosing rescue first. We appreciate you stopping by.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
