dogs are spayed/neutered, shots current (DHPP, Bordetella and Rabies where applicable), dewormed, flea and tick treated and microchipped. * If you are interested in a dog, please first read the biography on the dog (keep scrolling down for the bio!) and then go to our website, www.dpsrescue.com for an application. * We do not have a facility. All dogs live in foster homes. Arrangements to meet dogs occur after an approved application has been accepted. * We do not ship our dogs for any reason. * Our adoption fee is $400 for each dog/puppy. * If it is on a weekend of our adoptions, follow us on @DPSRescue on Twitter to get real time updates on our adoptions. We will also post at the end of the evening the names of those dogs who have been adopted: www.facebook.com/DPSRescue This dog will be at Palo Alto Pet Food Express on Saturday, January 21st from 1-4pm and Sunday, January 22nd from 12-3pm or until adopted. However, we do meet with those who submit an application and are approved just prior to the event (by invitation only) and they are given the first opportunity to adopt. If you are interested in one of our dogs, we recommend filling out an application prior to the event to be considered. Applications submitted within 24 hours of the event may not necessarily be reviewed. Maple is an almost 1 year old GSD-Hound mix who weighs 70lbs. She was originally an owner surrender to our rescue because she got too big and the owner wasn't able to handle her. She's a great dog who gets along with other dogs. She currently lives with several big dogs. She is an option for going to the dog park or doggy day camp. She could also join another dog in her foster home. Maple sleeps on the big dog bed in the front room at night. She has never had an accident in her foster home since she arrived there several weeks ago. (Makes a very happy foster mom!) She's an appropriately active dog who isn't the high GSD energy but more the goofy, droopy, derp derp kind of behavior of a hound who lays around and has spurts of energy. She would do well with daily walks, occasional visits to the dog park or a leisurely stroll along the beach. Maple could be a hiking dog if she wasn't expected to go quickly and with earnest but more with a go with the flow, "enjoy smelling the roses" type of journey. Maple loves toys, nylabones and playing with the big Great Pyrenees (who btw is much larger than her!) in the home. She walks much nicer now because of the gentle leader type of leash. She was a puller before but now becoming a much nicer walking dog. Initially in her foster home she followed her foster mom from room to room. It took a week to two weeks before that subsided and is most likely from settling in and finding her place. Her new home will need to expect the same to happen for her. She is apparently not a huge fan of the crate but finds herself in it when everyone leaves because her redecorating skills are not akin to Martha Stewart's! Maple is an option for kids over the age of 8. She is best suited for those who have had a dog in the last 3 years. **Not all of our dogs go to each adoption event. We want to make sure if you are interested in a dog that we have the dog at adoptions but that can only happen if you fill out an application ahead of time and are pre-approved. (Generally this must happen prior to the weekend) **If you are wanting to submit an application within 24 hours of an event, please print off the application and bring with you as well as submitting it. You may still submit it and if time and volunteers permit, we will contact you. Most applications submitted the weekend of adoptions are not responded to until after the adoption weekend.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
