ess you mean “fun-sized Anatolian Shepherd” Wes is a wonderful little guy. Tipping the scales at about 27lbs, he likely won’t get much bigger in stature, although as he matures he may fill out some. Wes is so cuddly, and loves to sit and watch TV with foster mom and dad. He asks for attention by gently using his paw if they don't notice him right away. Even though he loves to be there, he will wait for permission/to be invited up on to the couch or bed. He's a mellow little guy, and not vocal. He is not high energy; after about a half hour of play, he’s ready for a nap. Wes would check no under “Fan of the crate?” question, but is almost completely housetrained. During unsupervised times, if he’s confined to a room, the foster feels that he would do fine. At night, if he is given the opportunity to fully eliminate, he will sleep through the night. On the occasion when he did not fully eliminate prior to bedtime, he removes himself from the bedroom to go to a “designated” area to use a puppy pad that was put down for him in the family laundry room, he didn’t have an accident in the room. He's learned to share his toys with other dogs, and will share food (in treat form).. but is still uncomfortable with another animal approaching his bowl. He's fine with the foster taking the bowl away, and does not exhibit food guarding with humans. Having to have scrounged for food when he was young makes him wary of other animals around the food he knows is “his”. His reaction to cats are unknown at this time. One of Wes’ foster siblings is a very small dog that Wes largely ignores. He is currently also living with another foster that is about his age, although bigger, and there doesn’t seem to be any negative reactions there. With other (new) dogs, he's fine as long as they approach him appropriately. He has given a small warning growl when approached by a dog that made him feel a little anxious at an adoption event, but no negative reaction past that. He's still a puppy, so he will occasionally chew on something inappropriate, but responds very well to correction and redirection. Due to his young age, and rough early start, he'll likely need some activities to help build his confidence. Socializing and consistency with expectations of him will go a long way. He is very eager to please. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
