ut just a lovely, calm pup Observations with Dogs: good with proper intro, appears reactive when she sees them from a distance Observations with Cats: good Observations with Kids: not yet tested Currently Living at: DC area foster home Marlene is as smart as she is beautiful. She has worked with a trainer and is very eager for guidance and wants to please. Outside, she loves room to run and be active, while inside she is calm and very affectionate. She is athletic and very treat motivated. She has been the perfect houseguest in her foster home in terms of housetraining and crate training. While Marlene can be reactive when she meets new people and new dogs, if you give her a proper introduction and just a few minutes, she warms right up. She has been fostered with cats and does well with them. She hasn't been tested with young children. Found as a stray in rural SC, her transition to big city life wasn't the smoothest. Marlene needs an experienced and confident adopter because she is a fearful dog who tends to be reactive in situations she deems to be scary or chaotic. She does really well in quiet, rural environments, but can also be successful in a more suburban environment with the right set up and active training/management. This is not a dog who can live in the city as the pace and noise is just too stressful for her. Marlene was significantly underweight when she was rescued, but was otherwise healthy. She may have been a stray for some time, or perhaps neglected, but she has since put on close to 30 lbs and looks great. This dog is a stunner and she is very loyal and sweet to her humans. She needs a calm household with a patient adopter, who is willing to work with a positive reinforcement trainer to continue to build her confidence and manage her fear/reactivity. If you're a fan of this majestic breed, you will know she is worth it! Like most shelter dogs, Marlene may need a refresher on housetraining and crate training. We ask all of DC PAWS’ fosters to work on both house and crate training with their foster dog. The adoption fee for this dog is $350. If you are interested in adopting Marlene, please submit an adoption application at dcpawsrescue/adoption-info/adoption-application-dogs/DC PAWS Rescue does our best to provide accurate and complete information about our adoptable animals. Please note that we cannot make any guarantees about age or breed; we rely upon our rescue partners and their veterinarians to make those assessments. We also cannot make any guarantees about housebreaking and animal temperament, as animals can behave differently through transition and in different environments. Our shelter partners provide a basic vet screening for each animal we rescue, which includes necessary vaccinations, deworming, microchipping, and spay/neuter (unless the animal is too young or otherwise deemed by the vet to not be a good candidate for surgery). Please note that this is not a comprehensive medical exam and as such, may not identify any and all medical issues, though our goal is to flag any obvious health issues through the basic vet screening. We share all medical records with adopters and flag any known issues prior to adoption finalization. About DC PAWS Rescue Our rescue is an all-volunteer, foster-based dog and cat rescue in the DC area. We rescue from rural areas in the south, as well as local DC area shelters, such as Prince Georges County, MD and Wicomico County, MD. BE A FOSTER: Fosters make it possible for DC PAWS to save and care for homeless, neglected and abandoned animals! Sponsors help us provide critical medical care, food, boarding and other support for animals facing euthanasia. Individuals who sponsor a dog or cat receive special recognition on the animal's profile.  Sponsorships can also be made in honor or memory of a loved one, and you may designate to whom DC Paws Rescue should provide notice of your gift. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
