r to make new friends, both human and dog, and loves to be out and about. He is a great sidekick for adventures around town and the perfect snuggle buddy for movie marathons. Opie weighs around 45lbs. Opie came to us from the Yolo County Animal Shelter after he was found as a stray in West Sacramento. He was never claimed by an owner, so we swooped in and he has been doing great in his foster home ever since. Opie is a moderate-energy boy who loves to go on his walks but also can chill during the day while you work. He has been the best work-from-home co-worker for his foster mom. He is an affectionate pup who loves to get pets and be with his people and would love to be a true member of the family. Opie loves other dogs and could be a great buddy for a dog around his size. He also wouldn't mind being an only child with lots of dog friends. We have not seen Opie around cats, so we can't say how he would do living with them. Opie has done well with older kids and could be a great addition to a family with kids 10 years or older. Opie has been housetrained in his foster home and has mastered the dog door. He has also been doing well being crated overnight and when home alone for short periods. He seems to know his basic manners and has been non-destructive in his foster home. Opie is such a catch and we know he is going to make the best new addition to a family. If you think that might be you, submit an adoption application today! **Opie has been checked out by our vet and appears to have weaker-than-normal hips. He doesn't require any treatment but should be limited to the amount of high-intensity exercise he can do to avoid any soreness. He may need treatment as he ages, so his new family should be prepared to cover any future medical expenses.** Opie's adoption fee is $350. Apply to adopt here! form.jotform/52017002013129/ Applications are also available on the website (.yolospca) It can take up to 3-5 business days to hear back once you have submitted an application. The Yolo County SPCA is a private, not-for-profit, foster home-based animal rescue organization and does not have a shelter. All our animals awaiting adoption are in foster homes. Our adoption fees help us cover the cost of spay/neuter surgery, microchip and registration, and rabies vaccination (if over 4 months of age at intake or spay/neuter) for all animals. Dogs are tested for heartworm and started on preventatives, and are given a DAPP vaccination. Adult dogs are up to date on their vaccinations prior to adoption. Puppies will be current on the vaccinations appropriate to their age. The adopter is responsible for additional vaccinations as necessary after the adoption. For more information about an animal, please email dogsyolospca. For more general questions, please see our website at .yolospca.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
