another rescuer. Adoption Donation: $ TBD Located: in KY (Transportation costs included, please ask for more details ) Age: 4 1/2 years old Weight: Hi, By way of introduction, my name is Heather. I live in Lexington, KY with my husband, three children ages 17, 15 and 12, and our two dogs - Abby and Josie. I am wanting to can find a new home for Abby. Abby is a lab/golden retriever mix and is 4 1/2 years old. She is spayed, house trained and crate trained. We have had her since she was 4 months old. Over the past two years, we have had an issue with her just sporadically biting our other dog Josie (7 1/2 yrs old). There is no explanation for the biting - not over food, toys, attention - nothing. Abby is a WONDERFUL girl! She LOVES LOVES LOVES people and children. Never once has she ever shown an ounce of aggression toward people. Abby has a beautiful smile and the prettiest sparkling eyes you will ever see! She is completely house trained, as well as crate trained. We only crate her when we are not home, and to be honest, she would be totally fine not in her crate. She has never torn up clothes, shoes, furniture, etc. A tissue from the trash every now and then - yes. We only have to tell her "get in your house!" and she walks right on in. We have a fenced in yard where we let her out. She likes to be outside for a little bit, but likes to come back in soon. She LOVES to chase a ball or a stick! She's definitely an inside dog. She is trained to walk on a harness. She knows basic commands - sit, down and wait. She eats only dog food - 2 cups in the morning and 2 cups in the evening. She is perfectly content laying at your feet while watching tv or laying in bad, but will come up and snuggle with you if you ask her too, and will also get down when you tell her too. She sleeps with either me and my husband, or one of my two girls every night. I honestly can not even put into words how sweet, loving and fun our sweet Abby is. She is up to date on shots, heart worm, etc... I believe she is due in April for her yearly checkup and shots, so I will take her and have them done asap. PLEASE, if you have a little extra room in your heart and your home, please help me find Abby a new home. I just know you will fall in love with her. Thank you for taking the time to read my email. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
