y and has adjusted well to living indoors with two adults, two other dogs and one cat. Jax quickly became accustomed to the routine of eating two times per day with occasional treats, using the outdoors for potty time, obeying simple commands, playing with other family members and toys, car rides, walks and dog park visits. Jax isn’t a huge fan of the kennel, but he will go in with a treat and does fine for a few hours. However, since the other dogs do not require a kennel, Jax’s foster parents decided to try leaving him free to hang with the other dogs and he did great! Of course anything that might have been tempting to chew on was safely stowed away and there were plenty of dog toys to keep him busy. It has been cold and icy, so leash walks have been infrequent; however he adjusted well to the pack when he is on a leash. We like to use gentle leads for walks. Jax does not mind the car and he even does well in a kennel in the car. Jax will try to leave the car if any door opens so beware, he must be leashed and careful he doesn’t slip out the door in a busy street or parking lot. Jax will alert you when the garbage man or mail person comes. He is used to a completely fenced in yard. He can play outside for extended periods of time with the other dogs. Jax is eager to please and he likes to be in the same room with his humans. On the occasional times he slipped out the fence gate (while taking out the garbage) he stayed close and came when called. Jax was quick to figure out how to open storm doors by jumping and pressing on the handle. One thing that Jax needs help with is his strong desire to hug when he greets you, in other words he still likes to jump up like most puppies. At first it was really cute, but we suspect others may not want this behavior so we are working on how to greet each other without jumping up to hug. Although if you want to teach Jax how to Salsa, he will make a great dance partner. Jax plays really well with his foster brother and sister. He is curious about the cat when she enters the room and starts talking, but he knows to leave her alone. Overall, Jax is an amazing dog and we would keep him, but we want to continue fostering and helping other dogs find furever homes so reluctantly we are sharing how wonderful he is with high hopes he will find an amazing family to grow old with. Jack's adoption fee includes: Rabies vaccination, DHPP vaccination to age, bordetella vaccination, de-wormer, 4DX heartworm/tick disease test, neuter, pre-paid micro-chip, and a full veterinary exam. Adoption fee:$425.00

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
