some pounds with the green bean diet. Leonardo is described as friendly, cuddly, sassy, loves to play and needs lots of exercise. He gets hyper excited and needs training to curb his enthusiasm and jumping. He has been fostered with other dogs, but we feel he would do best in a home with no other dogs, as he can be very "mouthy" and intimidating. While he has never lived with children he has been around kids ages 9 to 15. He knows sit, stay, down, come but sometimes chooses not to listen to come. He will jump on people so before opening the door if you tell him"go get a toy" he will run to find a toy rather than jump. He needs more training on the leash as he pulls. Leonardo is afraid of fireworks and loud noises and likes to be next to someone if that happens; he does have some medicine that helps him not be afraid, but he only takes that if an event is happening. All potential fosters and adopters must complete an application, pay the $25.00 application fee and have a home visit before being considered for any dog. If you reside in Arizona and are interested in adopting a dog like this from Arizona Golden Rescue, we recommend that you visit our website and complete the Online Adoption Application to begin the process. arizonagoldenrescue.rescuegroups/info/adoption WE DO NOT ADOPT OUTSIDE OF THE STATE OF ARIZONA. Once we receive your application and application fee, a home visit will be scheduled. Once your home visit is approved, you will be placed on our waiting list. (Please be aware that your application cannot be processed until the application fee is paid.) Our sole purpose is to find the perfect home for the dog as our dogs always come first. Because we have new rescues coming in all the time, if the Golden that is the right dog for you is not available at this time it will probably come into Rescue and you would be notified of the availability. Waiting times vary depending upon how specific your preferences are. The more you restrict the factors involved in choosing a dog – age, sex, coat color, etc. – the longer the wait may be before we find the perfect dog for you. Please note: it is the policy of AGR not to place a dog less than 3 years of age with a family that has children less than 3 years of age. If you have specific questions about our adoption process, please go to this link at our website. arizonagoldenrescue.rescuegroups/info/display?PageID=20779 Arizona Golden Rescue is organized as an all-volunteer, non-profit, 501 (c) (3) corporation. We are a charitable organization whose mission is to rescue displaced Golden Retrievers and mostly Golden mixes that have been abused, abandoned, neglected or unwanted and find new, loving, permanent homes for them. Rescued dogs are given a complete veterinary exam and their vaccines are updated; they are also micro-chipped, spayed or neutered, and tested for valley fever and heartworm. AGR provides emotional and medical rehabilitation and will pay for medications and for necessary surgeries. Through education at public appearances, AGR seeks to educate the public about the Golden Retriever breed and about responsible dog ownership, in order to help reduce the unwanted dog population.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
